Zorin OS 5.2 Core released

23 November, 2011 - All, Zorin OS

We have released the second updated version of our latest Zorin OS 5 release series. This release uses the GNOME 2.X Classic environment instead of Ubuntu’s Unity shell. Zorin OS 5.2 features a whole host of updates to Zorin OS 5 including security updates, upgraded programs, an all-new window border theme, an updated icon theme, an overhauled sound theme that features a fresh, new start-up sound and the zRam patch that improves performance under RAM-heavy workloads.
You can get both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Zorin OS 5.2 Core here.

For Zorin users this comes as an update?

  • Madvinegar

Can we update to 5.2 (from 5.1) or do we need to do a clean install?

  • Madvinegar

Also in 5.2 do we keep the “look changer” option? (for win7 look etc?).

    • Hotchili100

      Yes

    • Beakman_ars

      It doesn’t work any more

      • Hotchili100

You did something wrong. The Look changer works !

      • Anonymous

Your downloaded .iso file may be corrupted. If you wish to use the Look Changer we would recommend you to re-download the file in Firefox.

it is based on ubuntu 11.10 ?
any way i’m looking for lite and fast distro that based on ubuntu ..
    i’ll give it a try :)

    • Craig

No….that is the ubuntu 11.04 based version of Zorin…it is the same as the previous Zorin 5 except with a few updates on it…the next version, Zorin 6 would be based on Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome 3…

Tried it on USB stick see no point in updating from 5.1 if you are fully up to date you will have the same Kernel, security and program updates but mainly don’t like the new start-up sound.

    Please, Zorin 6

    Best linux 2011

  • raul

    When will Zorin 6?

  • John Forbes

Not  looking forward to 6. Have tried the latest Ubuntu and Mint distos  they have top panels bottom panels popup side panels etc. my mouse is travelling 10X more than on Zorin 5 and even Windows Vista. In my opinion this is going backwards it may be OK for touchscreen Tablets but not for desktops or laptops. Can you install Linux on Tablets ???.

    • Craig

John: based on comments Zorin made in the forums, it sounds like it will be set up with just one panel on top with a “slab style menu” and on the bottom will be an “awn dock” which is like the cairo docky and that would give Zorin a very mac type of look (execpt for the slab menu of course…lol)

So, sounds simpler then the way mint 12 has it set up…might turn out to be pretty nice…

      • John Forbes

Yes it “might” but my attraction to Zorin is that it is so customizable it’s like the Swiss Army knife of O.S. but to me its just a tool I have no allegiance to any system just want the best tool for my requirements Progress seems to be offering me less, my knife now comes with many blades missing. When the time comes a Tablet will be my tool  that’s progress but trying to turn my laptop into one is not.
Or am I turning into a Technology Luddite cheers from Scotland

        • Craig

If you want the ultimate in customization…have you ever considered trying kubuntu (kde)…it’s probably the most customizable of all the linux desk tops…

As far as Gnome is concerned, it’s gnome 3 shell and unity now…gnome 2 is on it’s way out and won’t be supported or developed anymore…gnome distros like mint and zorin really don’t have any choice but to go gnome 3 at this point because it just won’t be possible to stay compatible with either ubuntu OR debian if they stay on Gnome 2…

          • John Forbes

Just tried Kubuntu on USB stick. It’s not for me too slow starting and stopping and my WiFi breaks think Zorin 5.1 will be my last system on this laptop until ”IT” breaks and I move onto the latest wrist communicator that does it all.

Cheers Craig and beam me up Scotty.

      • Bill

Sure hope you’re right. I have been using Mint 12 for a few days now and although Shell Extensions  allow some flexibility I still feel like a cow being led into a fenced in pen. They have taken our choices away from us.

    Zorin 6

    this is best Linux system

  • Yodafurball

    will there
be a torrent option to download?

  • Somebody

I’ve brought this up before; it would rock to have either…
    1) DL link and PW fro pro versions to have the proper hash for what we’re DL’ing, OR…
    2) Somewhere have the hashes posted in an easy to find place for the pro versions.

For instance, where do we get the hash for 5.2, ultimate, 64bit?

  • Rems Leveille

how do i upgrade to it new to zorin

    • Guest

You will need to backup your data (unless you created a separate /home partition), remove Zorin current then install new version. You could use remastersys to backup your current system to DVD (provided you do not have a lot of data) and copy your /home contents to the new install.

    • ChuckL

I upgraded Ubuntu 10.10 to Zorin 5.2 (64 bit) The install DVD advised that it would try to save my apps and data although some may  not be savable.
I tried it and It worked.  The only problem is the keyring problem noted above.

Zorin OS 5.2, surprised me in a verry pleasent way. Previously on my system Linux Mint was the prefered one. Now I have switched to Zorin OS. It is more stable and error free in compare with the latest version of Linux Mint, plus it has a verry nicelly menu and desktop style design, more suitable for my needs and taste.

For me is the distro of the year 2011. It’s not, only because few people hear about Zorin OS and tested this Linux distro.

  • akbozo

    is this an automatic update?

    • Guest

No – you will need to make a fresh install

  • Feardaunknown

Can I upgrade my Zorin OS PC to Windows 7 or Windows XP

    • Guest

Not aware that Zorin PC’s are available. If you have installed Zorin and want Windows on  you will have to remove Zorin, install Windows first then reinstall Zorin.

      • Wrayc

why would he need to do that when he could just add zorin to the windows bootloader using easyBCD and then dual-boot?

  • polimec

zorin 64 bits is very of unstable it freeze a lot

  • Paul B. Porzi Jr.

I’ve installed Zorin OS 5. I can upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10. My question is….if I upgrade, will my Zorin OS change? Meaning will it automatically change my desktop? Thanks…….

    • Hotchili

If you do that, your Zorin will be ruined and the result will be a mess. After that, the only solution is reinstalling the OS (Zorin or Ubuntu, at your choice).

    • ChuckL

The last I heard, Ubuntu 11.10 is using only that phone windowing system that I scrapped Ubuntu to avoid.

how i can  uninstall zorin and its drives or forlders?

    • ChuckL

If you don’t want to save anything, just reformat the drive(s).

  • ChuckL

I like it except for one thing. Apparently the installation app found an old password for the password keyring app, and loaded it.  AS I have never actually used this app I no longer know the password, but I can not stop the automatic call to the keyring. Does anyone know how I could do this or simply set a new pwd without the old one?
