Zorin OS 6 Core Release Candidate has landed!

19 May, 2012 - All, Zorin OS

After a long year of development, The Zorin OS Team are very proud to release the Zorin OS 6 Core Release Candidate, the pre-release version of our groundbreaking new operating system. Zorin OS 6 has been our most significant leap forward since Zorin OS’s initial release nearly 3 years ago. At the core of Zorin OS 6 lies our new, unique desktop environment named “Zorin Desktop” instead of the Unity, Gnome Shell and Cinnamon offerings. Zorin Desktop embraces all of the latest and greatest of Open Source software and technologies such as Gtk3 and other software from the GNOME 3 software stack, all without affecting the familiarity and usability of the desktop which still retains its Windows 7-like default look and our innovative Zorin Look Changer which allows users to choose between the Windows 7, XP and GNOME 2 graphical interfaces. Zorin Desktop uses AWN as the default panel to allow for unparalleled customizability and support for our different looks in the Zorin Look Changer. Along with the new desktop environment Zorin OS 6 RC packs a ton of software updates, a newly redesigned Software Center, Linux Kernel version 3.2 and a load of other improvements and features. We also include our  Zorin Web Browser Manager to ease the installation of web browsers. As Zorin OS 6 is based on Ubuntu 12.04 it is an LTS (Long Term Support) release, provided with 5 years of security updates.

The Zorin OS 6 Core Release Candidate is made to get your feedback on what we have created so far. It is only available as a 32 bit version but the final version of Zorin OS 6 will also be available in 64 bit.

You can download Zorin OS 6 Core RC here.

Screenshots of Zorin OS 6 are available here.

Congratulations, downloading this right now, can’t wait to test it / try it out.  :)

  • ThankYouZorinOSTeam

In download already. Just to bad that doesn’t come with the brand ZORIN OS 7 (SEVEN).
If would, I seriously would recomended to my friends to embrance the Open Source OS.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. =)

    • A response

This is just stupid.  “If it had this one number change I would recommend it” is basically what you just said.  The number has nothing to do with recommending, it has to do with sanity of keeping up with versions and their support.  It should be 7 because it is based on 12.04 and the 6 lite is based on 11.10.  Meaning the versions should change to keep sanity.  The number itself has zero impact on anything meaningful about the OS.

      • Response to A response

Should be 7 in this core version, because in a sanity way the 6 was left behind, meaning that the 6 version of Zorin is the Lite version and thats it. A linux for old computers.
A Great Release for being around for 5 years as in this LTS Release of Ubuntu + ZORIN has to come with some IMPACT NAME or number of version, whatever you prefer.
I am considering recomend to tons of friends and plus, will scattering around Youtube if the ZORIN OS Team reconsiderate this.
Hopefully this sanity note will come across the forums.
        Go ZORIN OS 7

        Thank You.

        • Response again

I agree, it should be version 7.  Point is though, simply because it is one number lower has ZERO impact on whether it is a good OS or not therefore it has ZERO impact on recommending it.  It should be 7 by every possible technical aspect.   Please, stop being stupid.

          • Response to A response

We all love Windows 7 right? At least 2 billion PC users around the world are satisfied with HIs/her OS on the desktop.
Linux has gained more space on Mobile and Tablets than ever for the last 3 years, but do you agrre that the 1% on the desktop suck?

Ok, good news are that the ZORIN OS Team worked for so long to bring more simplified and friendly Linux OS to the Desktp. Well and this should not have some impact at all? C’mon!

On the other hand.. a Linux based OS with Window looks should be on its very quality released, meaning LTS, with some substancial name as well, like ZORIN OS 7 (SEVEN).. Wow, who would thought that?

Man, please agree that the 6th version was abandoned and left behind… think this way: ZORIN OS LTS (SEVEN) will be around for 5 (((((FIVE))))) years, why not during those 5 years relasing the updated versions of 7.2…. 7.3…. and so forth. People like to be pointed the best way in technology things, why not presenting an awesome Linux OS for the desktop with the same brand as the most used OS in the World??

Why not thing this way? Do you consider being stupid to think big to at least 2 billion people?

After testing I really think that this released is compared to number 1 of it.

If the Zorin OS team change the brading name I will definitly sugest their OS with the 7 number for tha next 5 years. Alright?

            Thank you. =)

          • Kamran Mackey

maybe you people should stop being stupid and get took care of right so you people dont turn into a bunch of hobknockers!

          • Kamran Mackey

and no it should not be named zorin os 7. this is their 6th release. they are not gonna change it to zorin os 7. not gonna happen.

      • Wolfman

I have to agree with you there!!.

        Regards Wolfman:)

  • Hotchili

At least in Virtual Box, it is not working. The desktop flashes continuosly, a pop-up window can be seen between flashes showing a message about installed languages. I tried to click on “Start” , but everything moves very slow. I downloaded the ISO twice, from 2 differrent locations.

    • Ashu

Same thing happened to me. First I could not understand what’s happening. Then I figured out that since Zorin is using compiz from the start, so all this problem is due to it. I just somehow managed to install guest editions in VB after that everything was fine. So suggestion would be try to install guest editions “somehow”, if you can.

      • Hotchili

Version 5.2 uses also compiz from the start and nothing like that happens. I think I will wait the final edition. Thanks anyway.

        • Ashu

Since I didn’nt use earlier zorin os, so can’nt say anything about them. But compiz has some problems with Gnome-3 and zorin 0S 6 is based on Gnome-3, so there has to be some problems. Yeh! its always good to use final version.

GREEAAAAAAAAAAT I will download it right now

  • George

Running rc from live usb.  First impressions are really great.

One little bug i came across was that the Zorin menu items were listed double after a while, not sure when it exactly happened and when selecting any of the folders from the second list it shifted the content one up, so when i selected sound and video for example i got the office folder content.

    • Wolfman

       Hi George,

which desktop were you running at the time??.

      Regards Wolfman

      • George

        Hi Wolfman,

I didn’t change the DE, am just running the one Zorin uses when booting for the first time, i presume it’s the Zorin DE.  I solved it by changing the gnumenu theme.

Another thing that i found is that i need the logout everytime i change anything to the dock, for instance moving it to the side, adding or removing items, changing style.  This normal ?

And moving the taskbar to the side causes some glitches, as with many linux distros.  The noticification docklet just disappears and i can’t get it to work or moves to the top, but outside the bar/screen, seperators get copied just outside/beside the dockbar onto the desktop, but removing and re-installing the seperator applet gets rid of that.

        • Wolfman

           Hi George,

unfortunately you would need to do a full install as it is a release version and you would need to fully update it to get rid of some of the errors.

There are still a couple of things wrong with it but they will be ironed out for the final release.

I have installed it in Gnome 2 mode and apart from the odd problem with the graphics card, (Nvidia drivers not the latest version in the repo) it works fine!!.

Please take a look at this link:

          http://www.zoringroup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2053

          Regards Wolfman:)

          • George

             Hi Wolfman,
Ok, i installed Zorin to dual boot with w7, followed the after-install guide too.

When it comes to moving the bar to the sides, nothing has changed.  Moving to the left looses me the indicator applet or moves it to the top, outside the bar.  Moving the bar to the right clears the bar of all icons.

The doubling of the menu sections has happened several times , it happens every time i install a new app.  I can get it sorted when i change the gnomenu theme, but when i do this every single time the gnomenu applet crashes.  No biggie, just click on the (sad face) icon and the menu applet starts up again. Btw i’m using the w7 desktop.

Another problem i encounter is when dragging/adding a program to launch from the bar, i loose them every time i logout/login or reboot and i have to replace them again.

Another problem i had was the awn window navigator got up to 100% cpu usage after i removed a second bar.  Closed it in htop and cpu dropped right down.  I can only launch htop from terminal, not from the menu. Thanks for your patience.

          • George

Just added bleachbit, kept an eye on the install details and the menu doubled with the menu setup step

          • Wolfman

             Hi George,

did you follow the guide especially the bit about updating??,

I have a couple of problems with graphics; but nothing like you describe. I have made a few changes to the guide so you might want to take a 2nd look.

You are welcome on the forum too!!.

            Regards Wolfman:)

          • http://linuxblogx6.wordpress.com/ Sergio Esaú Arámbula Durán

Hi, a litle help for you: on my PC everytimes when I install a non specifical APP (which it is) after the installation my menu is doubled too, to fix it only go to: right click on the Zorin OS’s start menu > click on prefferences and click OK, after that you need to click on yes and next you need to do a left click on the sad face and it will be reloaded, ready problem solved

    oliver

    • rundrj

It is their custom desktop that they created.

      • Olivelinux36

ok thanks, is this desktop free and can we have a look at the source code ?

        regards

        • Phil-micrack

That desktop is just compiz+awn (the avant-window-navigator dock)+nautilus (handling the desktop icons).

        • Kamran Mackey

          NO YOU CANT.

    • Kamran Mackey

Zorin Desktop. gosh! dont be so dumb. they said it on their blog!!! gosh! you dont know nothing!

  • I Love myself and Zorin OS

I just tried this release of Zorin (Still hope that they release the final version with the name ZORIN OS 7)   and it works 3d graphics on the SIS drivers on my notebook.

Never was be able to rotate the cube and 3d stuff because this company (SIS) do not make 3d graphics for Linux and even do not open the code for the community.

But that said, it is annoying to work with 2 open windows and not be able to brag both to the conner… when you tri to move a window to the side it rotates the cube… PRETTY ANNOYING.
Could you get rid of the cube on the final release?

    Thank you.

Just to make a point to a response before:

We all love Windows 7 right? At least 2 billion PC users around the world are satisfied with HIs/her OS on the desktop.

Linux has gained more space on Mobile and Tablets the last
3 years than ever before on its existing 20 years and so, but do you agree that still that 1% on the desktop suck?

    Thank you. =)

    • Hotchili

I totally agree with you, regarding the number of the release. This should be Zorin 7. The reasons are very clear.
P.S. At this moment, Zorin OS 6 Core has a lot of bugs. I hope the problems will be solved soon.

      • Kamran Mackey

Yeah well I dont agree because this is their 6TH release! Not their 7th!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Craig

You are right…it would be pretty silly to call it Zorin 7 just because they skipped one version of ubuntu (11.10) before producing Zorin 6 with ubuntu 12.04…This would not have happened normally…it was only because of them needing to figure out how to do the desktop on top of the new gnome 3 environment…

          • Hotchili

So, Zorin OS 6 Lite is based on (L)Ubuntu 11.10 and Zorin OS 6 Core (followed by Educational) is based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. What a silly thing to call the last one 7 !  And after that to make a new version of Zorin Lite, based also on Ubuntu 12.04, named “7″. In fact, it is their decision to call this version in the way they want. But we can talk about logic, right?

        • Hotchili

Yes, it is their 6th release. But version 6 should be based on Ubuntu 11.10 and it missed. So, why it is so unusual to call this Zorin 7, since the very base of Zorin is Ubuntu ?

        • Cominatyalive

I agree, however, on the RC candidate 6.0 is only 32 bit. I tried it, and I do not like how you cannot maximize the (system settings) screen like you can in 5.2. After all, it is actually Ubuntu 12.04 in disguise but just without Unity. I was hoping Zorin would keep alot of the 5.2 design, but I felt it was cheaper, and pretty bare. And also, there was no word if gnome-shell would be compatible with the Zorin desktop. Right now, as far as I can tell, nothing can beat the Zorin 5.2 Ultimate 64-bit. It eats up these other, newer distros for breakfast & spits them out in a blink of an eye. Not Mint, Not the new 12.04 Ubuntu, not even the Ultimate versions, 5.2 is the most stable distro there is to date. No glitches, no freezes, no unity problems & compiz works like a clock. I’m going back to 5.2 soon, I just keep living on a prayer for a newer, better distro, and there isn’t any. ;-)

          • Kamran Mackey

I do not agree with you one single bit. I know that there are bugs in the Release Candidate and it looks pretty bare, it is still Zorin OS. It looks the exact same as 5.2 thus every single Compiz function works in the Release Candidate and all the bugs will be sorted out in the final version of version 6. And I’m pretty sure they are making changes to the taskbar and making it look more like the one in 5.2. So don’t you worry. ;-)

    • Kamran Mackey

I disagree with everything you said. This is their 6 release so they are calling their 6th release Zorin OS 6! Don’t be so stupid and go thinking that this is their 7th full release version! This is their 6th! Geez!

  • Anonymous

Epic! I didn’t think you guys could pull it off after the introduction of GNOME3. Downloading o.0

  • guest

Just asking, why is Chrome the default browser instead of Chromium? By the way, this was pulled off pretty much perfectly(AWN was sily a genius idea, who was the one who thought of that ?). How do I select a theme other than Ambiance, Radiance, etc? Is the application for that installed? I know that it is in Mint.

    • Craig

Chrome is actually better then Chromium and i for one am very glad he has it as the default…3 advantages of chrome over Chromium are: 1) It has it’s on built in pdf reader 2) It gets updated more frequently  3) It has it’s own flash plug in…

    • Rautatea

simple install ubuntu tweak and you can change the themes at any time

    • Kamran Mackey

Because Chrome is more stable than Chromium. Chromium isn’t even used on any linux distros anymore. Chromium is the baby brother of Chrome. Google Chrome is the big brother of Chromium. Thats why!

  • http://linuxblogx6.wordpress.com/ Sergio Esaú Arámbula Durán

Hi again I have installed Zorin OS and really I love it, only one more thing; I have some suggestions for you and are next, make all that changes and you will get the better Windows like OS at the world:

    1) replace Nautilus with  Marlin

    2) replace VLC with Rosa media player

    3) replace Rhythmbox with noise media pleyer

And finaly on Gnomenu’s prefferences check the number one eight and ten checkboxes,

making all that by default for the Zorin OS 6 core final release the OS will recover its better features like the old Nautilus elementary

please make it, if you fo it you will make me happy

    • http://linuxblogx6.wordpress.com/ Sergio Esaú Arámbula Durán

Hey all, I have checked how cool is Marlin and Noise as the default FM and MP and are PRETTY COOL, I love that mix of APPS, only one problem; Marlin is nol completly l10n and because that is not completly on my language (Spanish) so this is the only bad point but no problem, make ot the default FM and MP for the final release PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE XDDDDDDDD so, pardon for that, pardon me, this is a test of all I want to make these changes hehe

    • Kamran Mackey

No Zorin OS team. Don’t do what he suggests! Do what you want to do but dont do what he suggests!!!!

      • http://linuxblogx6.wordpress.com/ Sergio Esaú Arámbula Durán

Yep, do not do it, Marlin and Noise has a lot of bugs

        • Kamran Mackey

No that is not what I mean. They can use Marlin and Noise. They are my 2 most favorite applications.

          • http://linuxblogx6.wordpress.com/ Sergio Esaú Arámbula Durán

            Oh OK haha

  • Rackingman

Hi team! A simple question for “Z Guru”…

Is it possible to update Zorin OS 5 Core to 6 without having to install everything again?

    • http://linuxblogx6.wordpress.com/ Sergio Esaú Arámbula Durán

      Nope

      • Test!

Will users be able to upgrade from prior versions like 5.2 once the final version of 6 is out? It seems like a really bad move to not support upgrading. It was like that back with Linspire 5 was around in 2005. Every distribution since that time however supports upgrading.

    • Burhan

yes u can but u better off doing a clean install

  • Jous

Lookin good so far, Cant wait until the 64bit version comes out, The zorin team has really outdone themselves on this one and i must say i really like where this os is heading, The future looks bright keep up the good work guys.

  • Phil-micrack

I have a small question. What makes the Windoze look and fell Better than let’s say, XFCE, GNOME2. Haiku-OS, or OSX? Is it BETTER just BECAUSE it’s what Windoze looks like?

  • Dlwmason

When will the 64 bit Zorin 6 be available?

    What a good question, sir,

    thank you Team!

  • Vladimir

Downloaded and tried on two different but similar machines: Acer Aspire One 722, AMD C60 CPU with integrated graphics (that is powerful enough to show 720p videos without a glitch on Win7) and 2GB DDR. Second machine was my wifes eMachines netbook with 2GB DDR, Intel Atom CPU with intel HD (integrated) graphics.

Zorin is beautyful OS, and maybe the best distro for Win to Linux flyovers. But this new RC has some serious flows, as folows:

    - On AMD machine, recomended “Additional drivers” for graphics was big mistake. Since I’m not Linux Guru, I lost few hours figuring out how to uninstall them, since they were NOT active but in the same time message on the monitor says “Unsupported hardware” (or something similar) with plenty of bugs on the screen. When I finally uninstall it, I’ve installed AMD drivers found on their website – and viola – everything works as it should – but not HD videos. With 720p videos my notebook is struggling with many frame drops and freezing on VLC and even worst on default media player. On Intel eMachines, everything worked as on Windows.

    - If you close Lid and try to open it, Zorin will not wake up (he tries, but screen remains off), so hard restart is the only solution. Same problem on both machines.

    - There are many error messages on the screen with “Something is wrong” and trying to collect and send information to dev’s, but without success (unknown distribution). Samo on both notebooks.

    - George already pointed out on menu problems – same on both notebooks.

    - Sometimes Zorin fails to boot – freezes before login screen.

    - Skype crash on regular basis, and then only hard restart can help. When skype is mentioned, if you want microphone to work, I had to download pulse audio volume control, and start it from terminal, and then slide “left” mic slider to 100%, and “right” mic to 0%. Weird, but works. That is really bad ’cause my company use skype for almost all communications.

That’s it. Please guys, I really want to get rid off Windows, I really like Zorin, but it is unusable for me if it is buggy as it is now. I know that it is release candidate, but I didn’t figure out how to enable wireless card on stable edition of Zorin. On RC – It works from the beggining.

    • Vladimir

Forgot to mention, both installations was “clean install”, no dual boot or something. Delete partition, create new, format, install.

      • Wolfman

Vladimir, did you check this out??:

        http://www.zoringroup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2054

        • Vladimir

          Ola Wolfman,

I’m checking it now. Tnx! :) I hope my post can help dev’s of Zorin to tweak and correct few things before the final release.

Meanwhile, I’ve find that “Skype” is a problem on almost all distros :| The most successful hard restart initiator on Linux …

             Hi Vladimir,

Skype can be a problem, mostly with the sound, what I do is install the packages “sox”; “paman” and “libsox-fmt-all” to control the sound using Pulse Audio. don’t let Skype automatically control the sound settings!!.

            Regards Wolfman:)

Love Zorin 5.2 Ultimate and testing version 6 but on the task bar lower right I see the word “Time” but no date or time.  Might be a smaill bug as everything else seems to be working fine.

    • Wolfman

       Hi Dean,

once installed and the time location is set, that will disappear, you can use system settings in live mode to set the clock.

This is awesome, i have been waiting for a long time for this.

  • Linuxer

big no if zorin does not support version upgrade. Redownload apps, configure and restore data is time consuming. Better stick with ubuntu then..

    • Kamran Mackey

Actually you can upgrade to the final version. I told them to support it and it will be supported when the software manager checks for updates and versions.

    • Craig

version upgrades in ubuntu often fail anyway….even with ubuntu it is always best to do an clean install…so the fact that Zorin doesn’t offer that is a GOOD thing not a bad thing…It’s too easy to have someone upgrade and then have problems end up reporting “this distro sucks” when in fact if he had done a clean install he likely would have nothing but great things to say about it! (lol)…

So, thank you Zorin, for NOT offering an upgrade!  (LOL)

  • http://www.facebook.com/ahmed.fakhry1983 Ahmed Fakhry

Would like to know when the final version will be released.

    • Craig

There was an interview with Zorin…he didn’t feel that mate or cinnamon was the best way to go…i think he picked a great alternative way to have all the advantages of the new gnome 3 but at the same time retaining the look and feel of the more standard gnome 2 like desktop…I think it was a very wise choice!

    • Craig

sorry, my comment was actually meant for glennford who asked about having Mate…I would imagine the final is not too far away…they are probably just trying to get out the remaining bugs and the feedback in the forum should help with that…

  • Michaelleemcmenamin

    Hi,

If I download and install the Zorin OS 6 release candidate, would it then be a simple upgrade to the full release version when it arrives?

  • Tom Sturm

    (Google-Translation)
I’m disappointed. Gnome 3 and Unity have spoiled everything. Zorin 5.2 was the best version. As long as there are any updates, I will use it and then switch back to Windows. NOT a Linux desktop can be configured so as the user would like it (I love Gnome 2 … sorry). I recently read an article that gets right to the point: since GNOME 3 and Unity, there is nothing but a bunch of Linux thrown together desktop. Linux is no longer fun. Many of the Mac Feeling loved on Gnome 2 … History…!  Zorin 6 should get anown development of Zorin desktop … where? Everything back just a mixture. So, like many other Linux distributions also …

    • Dlwmason

I agree.  When the *buntu base went 12.04, it made a huge mess of linux.  Where it used to be fun and easy to use, now it is like windows, you do it there way or else.  It used to be that the user could decide how he wanted to do things, put icons on the desktop or open from the menu.  Now, you use the dock, period.

    • Anonymous

      to Tom Sturm

       try the desktop environment xfce

    • Kamran Mackey

You know you dont have to go fucking hating on GNOME 3, Unity and Zorin OS 6 you big retard! There is nothing damn wrong with fucking GNOME 3, Unity and Zorin OS 6. If you dont like it or dont have anything nice to say, Get a life!

      • Dlwmason

Whoa, Kamran. A little harsh!  I respect that you like Gnome 3, but I agree with the poster about not liking Gnome 3.  It won’t let you add icons to the desktop easily, and insists on using the dock.  What attracted me to linux in the first place was freedom of choice, not a regimented “Do it our way only” approach.  Ubuntu 12.04 and Gnome 3 seem to be overly rigid and restrictive, but that is just my 2 cents worth.  You are free to like it.

      • wyzwyk

@Kamran  I have to agree with Dlwmason, your response IS too harsh.  There is no need for name calling or obscenities!  As he stated, the developers at Gnome have taken away some choice that many Gnome users have long enjoyed.  Furthermore, I agree with him  that Gnome 3 is overly rigid and restrictive.

  • Guest

Hi, Zorin team !  I like very much this OS. I used Zorin OS 5.2 Educational and I think is great. But, no offense, Zorin OS 6 has landed with too much speed, I guess. Because, judging by the  number of bugs, it crashed in the contact with the ground. Well, I’m joking and I hope the issues will be solved soon.

  • Bill

     Dear Mr. Zorin,

First, thank you so much for the last two years. I have enjoyed being a part of the community that uses Zorin OS. But alas, the new addition just sucks big time. I realize it is not your fault, your hands are tied with Gnome 3 as a base. I will never use this OS. But I wish you well in your future life and all that you do. Take care.

    Bill Skiles, USA

    • Craig

It’s running that bad for you, Bill?  I have it installed and it runs like a dream…even the couple of bugs i saw on the iso are not present when i installed it…window previews on bottom are sometimes a bit quirky and the applet crashes if you change the gnomenu slab appearance (resets when you click the “Z” icon on the panel….otherwise haven’t really noticed any problems at all…

    • Anonymous

      I agree Bill.

    • Burhan

god knows what u dont like about Zorin 6, Bill….. I am loving it more than any other previous ZORIN editions….

      • Craig

I think he just hates gnome 3…gnome 2 is dead bill…time to accept that!
I use to run Zorin 5…went to ubuntu and now back with Zorin 6…Zorin 6 is the best yet!  and better then the old gnome 2 zorin 5….

    • Johnknuhtsen

I am running 6rc. Like it much better than anything since ubuntu 10.04. I think zorin has saved my future (with linux) until 2017 hereby ! I like to have compiz and cairo dock. Have it now.
      John, Copenhagen

ZorinOS 6 is great, but how about a Zorin with MATE in the future? It would be a winner…

    Dear Zorin.
I have downloaded your 6 beta and I think you have done a great job with it.
Installed on an Asus eee pc and everything works straight away.
I have been using Zorin for a few years and always been happy with it and the new 6 follows the same spirit.
Keep up the good work !

    Dear Zorin OS Team,

I loved using your OS and stuff but Zorin OS 6 RC is just too buggy. I loved being part of this wonderful community but your latest addition just SUCKS. I know its not your fault, your hands are tied with Gnome 3.4 as a base. I will never ever use this OS again until you fix the bugs that are in the Release Candidate. I wish you well in your future life working on Zorin OS and all that you work for. Take care Zorin OS team.

Kamran Mackey, Founder and CEO of The Next Web (I mean Facebook Extend which is being worked on)

    • http://artyomzorin.com/ AZorin

      Dear Mr. Mackey,
Please note that Zorin OS 6 RC is a pre-release version so there are bound to be bugs and issues with it. We are hard at work in fixing these bugs (we have already fixed many of the issues in Zorin OS 6) and we will release the final version of Zorin OS 6 when it is ready. Please bear with us while we are preparing the most advanced version of Zorin OS yet ;)

      Best regards,
      The Zorin OS Team

      • Kamran Mackey

You dont work at Zorin you idiot!!!!

        • Cwwgateway

To be honest, I have no idea if AZorin works at Zorin (I think he does, but I’m not sure). Regardless, you seem to be kind of angry – you’ve said ”
your latest addition just SUCKS”, ”
I will never ever use this OS again until you fix the bugs”, and ”
You dont work at Zorin you idiot!!!!”

      • Bill

I will check back in maybe the middle of June, just because I have loved 5.2 so much, but Xfce is working quite nicely and all my compiz features work great including emerald theme maker, but we’ll see.

  • dipas

i have tried zorin 6, saw few bugs, but the biggest bug for me is gnome 3. And as far as i tested it, now zorin became almost the same as ubuntu 12.04, just i should pay for ability to have unity-like panel at left side :D (i like panel on left side). Will wait for final release of zorin 6. Now i’m using zorin 5.2 and i’m happy! :)
But for me the most ugly thing (and i think its almost on all distros) is the login screen. I just cant understand why it is so ugly ;) I like the login screen on ubuntu 11.xx or 12.xx, so my suggestion to use ubuntu-like or …even something like win7… login screen for zorin os ;)
And thank you, zorin team, for good Linux distro! :)

    • Cwwgateway

The log in screen is a tweaked LightDM, which is what Ubuntu uses. Also, a lot of the latest distros have many different login “screens”:
*Mint uses MDM, which is a fork of GDM 2.20
*I think PinguyOS uses GDM 3
*Zorin uses LightDM with the unity greeter
*Ubuntu uses LightDM with the unity greeter
      *Kubuntu uses KDM
*Xubuntu uses LightDM with the gtk greeter
*Lubuntu uses LightDM with the gtk greeter (I think?)
I guess it’s possible to dislike them all, but Zorin and Ubuntu use the same one.

Anyway, I’ve been trying this release and I like it a lot, the only bug that I’ve found is that without 3d acceleration in a virtual machine it is very glitchy.

    • Ashu

In this world you will get all types of guys.  I am just opposite to you. I love this login screen (LightDM), where I just have to install good wallpaper and boy to me it just looks damm good.  In fact when I was using MATE, the Mint team started using MDM login screen, which I didn’nt like, but other users like it. So everyone has his own taste.

Well guys, I didn’t try earlier Zorin OSs. But I did try and played with Gnome-3, Unity, MATE and Cinnamon and I have to say that Zorin OS RC 6 seems better than other distros based on Gnome-3.

    • dipas

       yes, thats true!

  • Georgedvs14

I want to thank the Zorin Team for
their hard work in making something usable out of gnome 3! Just when
I thought I might have to buy a mac you release what I consider to be
the most intuitive and attractive gnome 3 distro to date. It is still
a long ways from gnome 2 when it comes to customization but it is at
the head of the (gnome 3) pack. I eagerly await your OS 6 final
    release.

  • Chuckiewarner

Why not go with mate as the desktop choice? I liked the way Zorin 5.2 was. It just doesn’t seem the same at all. A real shame. Mate with Gnomenu, and Compiz would have been perfect!!

  • == Technius ==

Hello, I installed Zorin 5.2 on my USB drive.  I decided to update to the 6.0 RC.  Before it gets into the login screen, it says “keys: Press s to skip or m for Manual Recovery”, or something like that. I always press “s” because it takes a long time.  Another thing I noticed is that proxies don’t seem to work.  I use this “mobile computer” at my school.  The school sets a proxy, but setting the proxy in Chrome or anything else doesn’t work.  It worked fine on Zorin 5.2.  I also experience random crash reports that pop up.  I can’t quite remember what they contained, though.  I love your work, and hope all the bugs can be fixed!

  • Anonymous

love the 6 core RC the only problem I have is some time I click on graphics in menu and it opens the games instead and some of the other menus do not point to where they should it’s like it get corrupt then i reboot and it’s fine any ideas?

  • Ojitsack

    Hello.

When will be the release date of the final version?

  • Ashu

Ok, after updating and doing the stuff as stated by Wolfman on the forums, I have to say that I am liking Zorin OS 6 RC. Did not install nvidia because of problems as stated and also noted by me, the system is working fine. Small bugs here and there, but over all job well done, better than any other Distro based on Gnome-3. Some small bugs which I have noted :-

    1. On clicking Z menu, the GnoMenu (hovering mouse there) appears and obstructs the view of Z menu search, I could not see what I am typing in search bar. While its fine in Zorin 5.2.

    2. On Z menu (windows 7 like) if I add any thing in favourites, I can’nt find in Z menu where the favourites is.  While in Lancelot menu favourites is working perfectly, which I am using right now and liking it.

    3. Can’nt increase and decrease sound (by mouse scroll) through panel applet, nor there is any notification on increasing/decreasing the sound, just like Zorin 5.2. So if you put some notification just like zorin 5.2 it should not be more than 2 seconds or it should be configurable.

    4. On clicking any right hand side applets on the panel and if my mouse moves even just a bit, all the other applets menu starts appearing, sometime it becomes very irritating. if I want to click any other applets menu, I can just simply click it, what’s the point of showing all the menu.

    5. As regards nvidia driver, Ubuntu/ Kubuntu are using Nvidia 173 and post updates. Even they are not using Nvidia 295. So Zorin should also stick to Nvidia 173 driver and let the users enjoy more.

    Rest on further exploration.

In the end I have to say sorry for not using or trying earlier Zorin OS. Regards.

I’m sure I won’t get this, but I’d figured I ask anyway. All I ask for is a comma, a simple comma and nothing more. I just want a comma in between the number for the date and the time. Is there better language support now? I installed ZorinOS 5.2 on my Thinkpad x61 Tablet and it’s awesome fast, even with the crappy X3100 chipset. But the missing translation (german in my case) makes it very bad, because all programs are set to english, even if there is multiple language support. I also have Ubuntu Studio 12.04 installed, it’s fully localized.

I am MOST grateful and Highly impressed with this Deb/Ubuntu 12.04 based Linux OS with LTS. Have run Ubuntu years ago and 2 years ago switched to MINT 9 for Multimedia support with codecs! I am retired, 67 year old guy on fixed pension with a home built 9 year old desktop PC and an ACER 3000 Ferrari Laptop. Tried to install Mint 13 on both 10 times and it failed. Tried PEAR 5 and it failed. Was about to resign myself to saving for a new PC, when I tried ZORIN 6 Core and it INSTALLED smoothly and works perfectly on BOTH of my machines!;-)) I mean these older computers with old BIOS won’t even Boot from a USB drive! THANK YOU! GREAT JOB, Zorin!

Hello, I’m usin Zorin 6 and I’m mostly pleased with it. I do have some problems though: Graphic driver (nvidia, Geforce GTX 560Ti) hangs pretty often and i need to close computer from power button (screen freezes and after a while i see pink artifacts then no signal to monitor). Other problem is that i cannot get headphones to work and keyboard layout + other settings don’t persist on boot.

  • Richard Arndt

I love the traditional user interface. Unfortunately it is far to buggy and unstable. For instance. The computer can’t be shut down by an admin when any other user is logged in unless issuing the shutdown command from a terminal. A minor annoyance to me but a wtf to my girlfriend that wants to just shut her computer down despite one of her kids forgetting to log out. The network manager crashes for me constantly. I’m using supported wifi hardware and as far as I can tell its simply the user interface that is crashing. Earlier today the GnoMenu simply wouldn’t respond. While the UI looks sleek and will attract former windows users, the bugs will send them howling back. Nice try not ready though.
