The Zorin OS Team have released Zorin OS 6 Educational and Gaming, the education and gaming-oriented versions of our operating system designed for Windows users and those who are dissatisfied with the Unity and Gnome Shell offerings. At the core of Zorin OS 6 lies our new, unique desktop environment named “Zorin Desktop”. We also include our innovative Zorin Look Changer which allows users to choose between the Windows 7, XP and GNOME 2 graphical interfaces (in Educational) plus the Mac OS X, Unity and Windows 2000 interfaces in Zorin OS Gaming. Zorin Desktop embraces all of the latest and greatest Open Source software and technologies such as Gtk3 and other software from the GNOME 3 software stack, all without affecting the familiarity, usability and customizability of the desktop and retaining the Compiz window manager. The Educational edition includes dozens of educational programs for primary, secondary and tertiary students to provide for an ideal digital learning experience while the Gaming edition includes the best Linux games and emulators out-of-the-box.

The Educational version is much better behaved after tortuous Updating than the Ultimate version which I’ll now have to try re-installing from scratch. However neither version is for Linux newbies who won’t know about Icon Property permissions, let alone sudo dpkg –configure -a or sudo /usr/bin/update-manager to get past some rather basic bugs, largely courtesy of the Ubuntu team ?
Still not coping as well as Clem ?

I have not had a problem with anything, in fact I have completely fallen in love with this OS, and have tried to tell countless people about it….keep up the great work…i think after this deployment I will be donating!

Would you give the “Look Changer” and “Windows 7 Menu” free to the Linux world? Or they are hidden commercial applications?

  It is not hidden, but there is no repo to download it. You download the Zorin, any Zorin os and you can copy it, if you want. It is GPL.

I’m fixing up an old computer for a relative’s son and she wanted me to find some ‘educational’ software to put on it. Zorin OS 6 Educational Lite caught my attention so I’m downloading it right now to see what’s on it.

  add the Webupd8 PPA per the instructions and then add the “Gnomishgray” theme and you will have a nice colour match of light grey and black font colour.

Nice OS, but the nvidia issue needs to be addressed. The solution is not to just “not use 3d acceleration”. The nvidia driver is not broken (as it works fine in the other thousand distros out there) but it is something with this custom theme thing in Zorin. It is the only reason that I stear clear from the OS. No video acceleration is a big no-no.

  Do you think the nvidia driver would work with Gnome fallback mode, which is what Zorin OS 6 Core, Educational etc are based on? Isn’t the fallback mode the inferior level of the Gnome-shell? Gnome, I heard is going to drop the fallback, then what would it be for the Zorin OS 6? Won’t it be redundant, even before one year of that 5 year LTS?

    Zorin OS 6 currently uses Zorin Desktop which runs on top of the GNOME Fallback session. We have other options to keep Zorin OS going if GNOME Fallback mode is dropped. You can be assured that Zorin OS 6 will have 5 years of support and updates.

      That’s what you say, zorink, but Zorin 6 is not based on GNOME Fallback session, as in that session you can’t have eye-candy effects, in other words, Compiz won’t work is that session. Zorin 6 is made out of Ubuntu 12.04 and Unity is taken off, but Gnome 3 is there and Compiz is the Window Manager and AWN is the Desktop and AWN is re-named as Zorin Desktop.

I am wiling to download this version for my 3 years old child. Are there any ‘torrent link’ for this zorin os? I am fear of corrupted file. If I found it corrupted after download 1.9 GB, then how do I repair it? Would you please give me some suggestion?
