Zorin OS 6.1 Lite is released

The Zorin OS Team have released Zorin OS 6.1 Lite, the latest evolution of the Zorin OS Lite series of operating systems, designed specifically for Windows users utilizing old or low-powered hardware. This release is based on Lubuntu 12.04 and uses the LXDE desktop environment to provide one of the fastest and most feature-packed interfaces for low-spec machines. This new release includes updated software, the newer Linux Kernel version 3.2, as well as other improvements. We also include our innovative Zorin Look Changer, Zorin Internet Browser Manager, Zorin OS Lite Extra Software and other programs from our earlier versions in Zorin OS 6.1 Lite.
You can download Zorin OS 6.1 Lite from the “Lite” section on our free downloads page.

We hope that you will enjoy using Zorin OS 6.1 Lite!

So it’s not long-term support. That sucks.

Unfortunately Lubuntu 12.04 is not an LTS release and as Zorin OS 6.1 Lite is based on Lubuntu 12.04, it follows the same support path as Lubuntu.

      • Mulyadi

hi Zorin, to the best I know, 12.04 is indeed LTS and it receives 5 year support….

        • http://www.facebook.com/dancemat Matthew John Meadowcroft

          Hello Mulyadi,

Whilst this is the case for Xubuntu and Ubuntu, sadly it is stated on the Lubuntu site that 12.04 is not an LTS. It is supported for 18 months.

Why the difference, I really don’t know why. You would think they would all stick to the same structure. :)

          Kind Regards,

          Matthew

I was hoping the kernel would be newer than the 3.2 … oh well

    • http://artyomzorin.com/ AZorin

As the kernel versions above 3.2 are not compatible with the current stable Live CD system, we have to distribute Zorin OS 6.1 Lite with the 3.2 kernel.

      • Bruce R

At least it’s the better 12.04.1 kernel and not the disastrous 12.04 version.
Meanwhile it’s proving surprisingly easier to add to and customise than other Zorin6 versions, so your team effort is improving, congratulations !

Why is so hard put an image in all releases?

    • Alex Rivera

Would my laptop be considered old spec? Toshiba Satellite L305-S5896
      - Intel Pentium
      - 2gb DDR2 Ram (going to upgrade to 4gb)
      - 120gb HDD
      - Intel Graphics 4500 mobile

I’m new to linux and want to learn about it. I was directed here by a friend.

Congratulations! Great news! Does it have a different look? Screenshot worthy? ;)

I prefer only a “Z”, “Start” is a english word in my system non-english.

Does the plan is also 6.1 Core?

    Good for you!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/dancemat Matthew John Meadowcroft

Thank you for the release, hoping Zorin Core will get the 12.04.1 update just like Xubuntu and Ubuntu. When it’s ready of course. :) Really happy with the recent releases. Thanks for the hard work.

    Hello Z-team,
thanks for the ‘lite’ edition. It boots in < 30 sec on my old Toshiba NB305, which is a 50% improvement re. other linux distros, and 25% faster than factory-provided Win7 starter (which has been much tinkered with). Bells + whistles for you!

  • miral

R6 0.1 lite going better than R6 (for me more fast)
I puted in my old (10 yaers) laptop. (R6 core was not possible to install in this), but i add for Lxde alsow Mate (fork of gnome2) and work well !!! I’m very glad. Thanks

  • miral

My Zorin R6.01 lite with Mate look like this:

  • AKS1969CW

New to Zorin but very pleased. Small remark is that my Internetbrowser changer doesn’t work. (I’m not very used to Chromium. I like Firefox better). But it is fast, stable and easy to use.

    Please add Lock Screen function

  • Jaaames54

Hey! Every time I try to install zorin OS 6 lite I get a black screen but it’s acually a really dull version of the desktop, the problem is it wont let up the brightness so I can’t acually install it.

    • Jaaames54

Any reason why and how do I fix it? Thanks.

    • miral

I have this problem with every distros from ubuntu and debian (after ubuntu 10.10) that sometimes comes black screen. To activate screen i must put Fn/F6 together (or Fn/F5)

    • robomo

I had this issue with my on-board motherboard graphics (ATI HD 4250) and regular 32-bit Zorin OS 6.1….and then fixed my issue.

I couldn’t even load Grub from a Live USB drive….until I swapped the monitor cord from DVI to standard DSUB VGA. The analog cord made all the difference apparently as the monitor would blink “out of range” with the DVI cord. It seems the included drivers were sub-par for my graphics card, but it was able to work with the analog VGA.

Once installed, I downloaded ATI’s proprietary Catalyst drivers and again had the “out of range” issue… until I switched back to the DVI cable. Now I’m rock solid at 1280×1024 if I want, but it took a bit of figuring out and head scratching….

  • Eric

How to upgrade from Zorin 5 lite?

    • swarfendor437

I’m afraid that is not possible – back up all your data and installl 6.1 afresh.

  • CroatianFan

I’ve just installed Zorin OS 6.1 Lite on my old IBM desktop (CPU Intel Pentium IV 2.4 GHz, 1GHz RAM), and it works great! A beautiful and solid GNU/Linux distribution – thanks, Zorin OS team!

  • Levent

Hey, hey! Pentium III 1 Ghz, 1.5 GB RAM, 32/64 MB Nvidia video card and it is flying. I use LibreOffice, watch all videos and DVD videos with VLC Media Player. Thanks Zorin.

  • Atheologian

BRILLIANT!!! Zorin-OS 6.1 Lite could have been tailor-made for the EeePC 701/4G Surf. Everything works, & if I increase RAM to 2 GiB, I should be surfing the Zuvuya.

LXDE/OpenBox is simply the best. Interestingly, MadBox, which I use on my other surfboard, 12.04 uses LXDE/OpenBox, too, but being based on an Ubuntu Minimal, it seems to have LTS status.

Nonetheless, 6.1 Lite is the best *nux I’ve tried yet, even better than my own custom build.

  • meuseit

it would be AWESOME to see another version of LITE with the new E17. thanks for all the HARD WORK> awesome distro!

I just installed Zorin OS 6 and everything goes smooth but after installation and boot up, the image in the screen starts behaving strange, flashing, a window image still there after i’ve closed it and getting black from time to time. I had Ubuntu 12.04 and i had no problem.

  • ScoottyDUK42
