Well I have got tired of the 'lockdown' - fortunately I made a mistake in my command line and got quite a nice bit of Gnome!:

Code:
sudo apt-get install gnome tweak

And now I have calm! :D

How do you get the icons on the desktop? I had Chrome but not I have to go through the menu to bring it up.
I also have 3 OS versions;
zorin with linux 3.13.0-32
zorin with linux 3.13.0-30
zorin with linux 3.13.0-29
Each of these has both a generic and recovery mode.
Which should I remove?
The computer also has XP on a different partition.

Hi, to get the icons on a standard Zorin install (like Gizmuntu's) go to the Menu right-click the application you want to be on the desktop and select 'Send to desktop' - can't remember exact wording as at work! ;)

As for those kernels, get rid of the lowest one, PROVIDED number 2 boots o.k. - to remove the earliest one use Janitor in Ubuntu Tweak - How to get it here:

Hi, all.

Well, here's mine. I'm a bit of a 'gadget freak'; don't say I didn't warn you!

http://i.imgur.com/dVjdSDN.png

I DO like the fact you can move the taskbar around....and I found this really neat wallpaper on one of the photographic bulletin boards (can't remember which one)...

BTW: That weather app was supposedly written specifically for Ubuntu 14.04, but since Zorin OS 9 is based on it, I thought I'd see if it worked...it does, too! In fact, on the old 3.13-0.32 kernel, it worked about 50% of the time; since I've been upgraded to the .33 kernel, it now works ALL the time. Some of the info is a little naff at times, though; 'partly sunny' at half-past midnight?? :? And as for the half-dozen or so extra volumes; I'm playing around with a bunch of the 'buntu distros, and a coupla Mints, on several small partitions on the external Seagate!

Must be a glutton for punishment...

Also running PSensor in the top taskbar. I used to have an old Dell laptop, running XP, with a Netburst Intel 'Celery-stick'; man, did that thing run hot! It regularly pushed 70c-plus.....and this was back in the days when Intels didn't have such a high ceiling as they do now. It now runs Lubuntu-32; barely breaks a sweat at 40-45.

I've always run temp. sensors of one kind or another since. But if the Athlon hits 40, it's baking..! AMDs DO run cool...at least, mine does!

Regards,

Mike.

ps: I LIKE Gnome; but Psensor won't run with it! I logout with Win-7 look, log back in, it autostarts and runs nicely. If I change to Gnome during the session, logout, log back in again, PSensor's disappeared.....and it WILL not start. So, Win-7 or XP-look it is..... *Sheesh*

Hi Mike, very nice desktop! So is that digital clock part of the weather app? Where did you get it from? Have you tried LXLE on your old 'Celery-stick'? :D Talking about things getting hot, it has become evident to me that power adapters in the UK get extremely hot because the world market is based on 110 V - my netbook adapter for this HP Mini netbook I am sending this on is stone cold when using it here in Mallorca - at home it is like a hot stone used in massage parlours - and no I have never visited one (referenced to Big Mamma 2 film! )

Thu Aug 14, 2014 12:40:14 pm

Hi, Swarfendor!

Oh, you're out in Mallorca at the moment, are you? I haven't been there for about forty-odd years..!

Yes, the big digital clock IS part of the weather app. There's about half-a-dozen different versions of the widget that you can select, and you can set it for 2 different locations, too. My big one is set for King's Lynn, where I live, and the little one is set for Ipswich, 'cause that's where my sister lives! The whole thing is set-up through Google maps, so you shouldn't have any problems with selecting anywhere in the world.

It's called my-weather-indicator. I can't remember exactly where I found it, now; since moving to Linux back in May, I've discovered a whole new world of websites about tweaking and customising the various distros that I use. It may be in the Software Centre (but then, it would show in mine since I have it installed...); but if not, either Google it (make sure you put the '-' between each word), or, if you like, here's the link for the developer website:-

http://www.atareao.es/

Strangely enough, as you can see, it's a Spanish one! I daresay if you spend any amount of time over there (do you actually live there?) then you've probably got a translater somewhere on your browser; have a look, and see what you think. You get a five-day forecast, too, and all sorts of other stuff...

Just for interest, look at my Unity desktop, here:-

http://i.imgur.com/fSW3iff.png

It's on there, too! That's partly set-up for the 'Win 7' look via the Unity Tweak Tool; icons and such-like, mainly, though I have to confess, I'm one of those people who actually LIKE Unity; I guess that's because I never used the Gnome desktop.

I daresay you're probably right about the power supply adapters; I know the one on the old Dell gets hot enough to fry an egg on! And no, I haven't tried LXLE. I've tried the 32-bit versions of Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Zorin OS Core 8, and 'Slacko' Puppy Linux... Very oddly, they all show full-screen on the Live CD, when you're trying it out, but upon installation, the screen resolution is stuck at 640x480! I use 'nomodeset' in the boot parameters, which moves it from the top left corner to the middle of the screen, but that's ALL you can do with it. The desktop is in perfect miniature, but the windows and icons are full size, so.....since most windows have their action buttons at the bottom of the screen, you can't access them; and you can't move the window, because IT thinks it's on a full size desktop. It's frustrating as hell, but it's a known problem with the 2003-issue Dell laptops; they all used the Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE graphics chipset (the 'Extreme Graphics' one).....and I haven't found ONE person who had a good word to say about it..!

I don't know whether the newer kernels have addressed the problem; I was on the 3.13-0.33 kernel till this morning.....I've just had the 3.13-0.34 version come down the pipe today (only had the .33 for a week!); doesn't seem to be any regressions SO far..!

And the annoying thing is, the old ATI RS482-based Radeon Xpress 200 graphics chipset in my desktop (Compaq Presario, which I'm writing this on) is about the same vintage (2004), and IT works perfectly! VERY strange... In fact, the Presario (at 10 years old) is ANCIENT by today's standards, BUT.....it ALL still works as it should. I LOVE that old Athlon 64...To be honest, running Linux (any version) it FLIES compared to XP! It was gifted to me by my sister, 'cos it was running XP, and like most non-techie people, she was getting her knickers in a twist over end-of-life; and, like most non-techie folk, it was easier for her to buy a new one with Win 7 pre-installed.

I would guess it's had about 2 years use in the nine years she had it; she only surfed occasionally, and played 'The Sims' on it...not exactly graphics-intensive, neither! I've tripled the RAM since I've had it (BIG difference!); had the printer and mouse already, bought the keyboard and Seagate since; my bro donated the monitor, cause he, too, was upgrading from XP Professional (he works from home). He's lashed out nearly 2 grand on a top-of-the-range iMac!

I have no problems with hand-me-down computer gear. All contributions gratefully accepted; you know yourself, you can ALWAYS use 'em for SOMETHING!

Gawd, I DO run on..! I've been playing about with these things since the early 80's; things have really accelerated, this last decade...

Regards,

Mike.

Hi again, swarfendor.

If you look on the developer website, and follow the links through, you've got the terminal installation instructions there, if you're interested. It uses about 16 Mb when it's installed.

Just used the translator, and looked through it myself...

BTW, you'll find the 'Open Weather Map' weather sevice seems to work best; the other three are a bit flaky, and don't always display for some reason (they keep coming up with N/A).

Regards,

Mike.

Yeah I realize themes can be added to windows its just not as easy as in Zorin. To be honest I didn't really dump windows I broke the boot loader when I reinstalled zorin and by the time I realized it I had Zorin set up as I wanted in the first place so I'm leaving it till I am updating zorin. The only way I know of fixing it is to use the windows recovery disc and that will mess up zorins grub and I can do without it for now and I can have the use of another laptop with windows if I'm stuck.
Today I changed the icons, these are called Gartoon and wallpaper, I like wallpapers that look like space or earth.
Image
I took the advice from this thread and searched for Gnome Themes in synaptic, I think these came with a group Gnome icons & themes.

I found the wallpaper either on google images or some wallpaper site, I use deviant art too I don't create any.
I like dark or black wallpaper to match the panels I usually use Ambience dark or dark red/blue.

Heres the link for conky themes I use its called conky deluxe theme pack and works well with conky manager there is at least 60-70 themes in it.

Some nice wallpaper in that lot, thanks. So I finally got round to making my own conky. I didn't start from scratch I found a very small one and made it about 4 times bigger and added logos and audacious info, zorin 9 is added by me too and most of the other stuff it only had kernel and CPU and Mem but had no logos like the arrow for up speed and down speed. Its not as hard as it looks and a lot of the conkyrc in the theme pack explain how you can change thinks its like instructions in the conkyrc.
I'm just wondering theres a screen shot on top of the page saying zorin 9 with zorin 10 themes can we add or install those themes in zorin 9? I would love that if we could.

After some tweaking and work, I made my Zorin 9 desktop look as close to 6 as humanly possible, since i'm not a huge fan of the user interface that 7-10 has.

As you can see, the explorer isn't changed, since I guess 6's GTK theme is not compatible (it looks glitched). Though other than that, I think it's as close as I'm gonna get.

Thanks a lot ! ;)

Really love how everything blend together ( background-picture + docks + widgets ) , and given the bluish tone... it's a perfect match for Zorin's default theme :D .

I just have cairo dock on the bottom + AWN on the left side ( just in case... since cairo freezes from time to time when i'm about to shut the system off ) ... and for the time being, will leave it like that... but i'm just waiting until.... may? ( maybe ) for the new Zorin 12 LTS ( can't wait ) ... and then, think i'll do something based on your setup ^__^ .... something different... will have to find different background pictures that matches the new Zorin themes ( did i say "can't wait" already ? ) .

I really love Zorin, and while it's true i never stop testing/trying other distros ... i always come back to Zorin for daily use and wouldn't have any other OS at home ( everybody loves it there since most of my family used Windows before , so the transition was painless ) . There is only one other desktop in the near future that is .... will be ( some bugs they still need to iron out, they're are at an early stage ) a rough competitor: Deepin .

Swarfendor437

Sun Mar 27, 2016 7:34:40 pm

I did run Deepin a while back - I have Makulu "Aero" on another drive but I have tweaked my desktop to use GnoMenu instead of ZorinMenu and use one of Gizmuntu's menu designs - and the power off and logout buttons work on that:

When was the last time you tried Deepin ? I also checked it a while back, but compared to the current stage.... it's a different story .

In fact: i revive a lot of old computers and/or install Linux instead of Windows for many relatives & friends, and given that they all come from Windows and not too much into computers, just basic users... usually i go with Zorin as the best choice for them... but if Deepin was 100% ready to be stable enough for daily use... my heart would be divided nowadays.

They managed to make the mos basic tasks so simple... so easy; all of 'em ( and then some ) are just a couple clicks away, their Deepin store is faster & nicer than Ubuntu's... everything is great... so easy that it bores me  ... but that's just me, i'm used to try all type of distros & desktops, and currently aiming to install Arch and personalize everything as i want... but on the other hand, for basic users... it's a perfect fit on my view; not too customizable for experienced users, but absolutely great for beginners.

Makulu is a real pity, would have been great, but in my experience with different computers it still has too much bugs to keep it for daily use.
Your desktop looks nice & tidy :D , here's mine by the way( quite empty i know... ):

Swarfendor437

Mon Mar 28, 2016 12:48:52 pm

Nice! I think it was Deepin 14.01 or a 13 - I have the iso on backup somewhere! Yes the issue with Makulu "Aero" is it is only 64-bit - I recently recycled some work PCs and Zorin would not take on an old machine, so I put SolydX on that - another nice simple menu for Windows migrating users and a very simple software centre/er.

If it was Deepin 13 ... you definitely need to try this new version :D

I also tried the previous desktop, but that one has nothing to do with the current stage of development of Deepin ( 15.1 ... and just saw they are at 15.1.1 now :D ) .

If you used Deepin 14 then... well, it'll look similar... but now they are based on Debian and focused on making everything more resource-friendly :) , not to mention the new interface for the Deepin store .

Anyways, they still need to polish some things here & there, but now they are also working with the Manjaro community so hopefully they'll be able to fix things at a faster pace .

Yes the issue with Makulu "Aero" is it is only 64-bit

The only one ? Thought the main problem was it has way too much bugs. Have you experienced any on your system ?

As a person used to "revive" old computers for relatives & friends, must say i didn't knew about SolydX and find this information extremely useful. Thank you very much !

Just finished googling about SolydX and just discovered the whole story behind. It's great ! Finally they found some way to keep such a promising project alive .

What's the lowest specs machine you tried SolydX on ?

I recently gave away one of my old computers i used to "experiment" with different distros. It had an old mono-core AMD Athlon 64 ( the first 64bits processor if my memory doesn't fail ) with 2 GB ram, MSI K8N motherboard and plenty hard disk space.

This particular hardware setup always have always rejected Ubuntu-based distros for some unknown reason. Tried plenty distros & fixes, but even if i fixed one thing... another one was coming, so just gave up.

It was then when i realized Debian was a perfect fit, much lighter too with any given desktop compared to Ubuntu-based distros . In fact, made me look in retrospective ... and also realized Debian never gave me any issue with old computers.

All of this to say that when i was about to give away one of my beloved testing computers, wanted to give his new owner something really special, more than "just an old computer that worked well.... given his age" ... so i started wondering if i could make it even lighter & faster not resourcing to "scary" ( for newbies ) desktops like OpenBox .

And found exactly what i wanted on Manjaro LXQT ( yes, i know... LXDE is said to be slightly lighter ) ^__^ .

His new owner just had very basic needs ( he is the type that barely worked his way around Windows XP ) : check a couple websites , download some files from here & there ( bandcamp, youtube... ) , play some videos.... and that's it. Really basic , as i said.

In order to make the environment as friendly and low on resources as possible i just did the following:

- Removed the desktop background and just set a black plain color ( funny enough, the new owner told me he liked it more that way :) , it was less distracting )
- Added Cairo-Dock with auto-hide ( could have gone with Plank... that's lighter... but wanted to reach middle ground between aesthetics & low-resources )
- Main panel position "on top" with auto-hide as well.
- Main browser: PaleMoon ( Firefox based... but 25% lighter :) ... and all firefox add-ons works with it ! )
- Main video player: Xine ( quite dated GUI, but arguably the most extremely low-on resources video player i've tried on Linux  ... i was able to play even 1080p videos fluently ... and i seriously mean "fluently"... even jumping from the minute 1 to minute 59 was almost instantaneous . Absolutely amazing ! )

With just these few changes, an old 12 year old mono-core computer is now working as fast as most nowadays budget computers ( with no SSD, that is :) ) .

Granted, it doesn't have a fancy desktop full of effects... but it boots quite fast ( same time as an Asus X54H laptop i had with the exact Linux distro installed :) ... but that Asus had an I3 processor , 4 GB of new-gen DDR, etc, etc... ) , has a fancy & stylish dock :P ... and above all.... it's incredibly fast !!! I myself couldn't recognize my old computer, dock's animation is perfect ( no delays, etc.. ) , no issues playing any type of video, or anything else, PaleMoon proved to be much faster than Firefox... it was absolutely incredible.

Aesthetics aside, compared to current computers and for the use that old computer will have, the only thing lacking would be browsing the net even faster or launching "heavy" applications . PaleMoon team did a great job, since browsing with Firefox on this old computer was much more slower... but doing the same with PaleMoon made it much more acceptable .

Tried Debian & Debian based distros on that very same AMD Athlon + MSI K8N motherboard computer before , all of them with lightweight desktop environments ... but so far, looks like Arch based distros like Manjaro managed to optimize resources even more :P , and i'm really thankful for that, not to mention the new owner for that computer .

Nowadays, i'm focusing on finding distros that manage to get the most out of your laptop's battery . Needless to say, that Asus X54H with Manjaro LXQT was my first experiment about it, and so far... keeping in mind it's a 4 year old-quite used/re-charged battery ... is doing quite well ^__^ : that laptop had Windows 7 / Windows 10 / Zorin OS9 / Deepin 15.1 .... and none of those showed more than 1h30min with the batter at full capacity .

I even updated to the latest Kernel with Zorin installed, plus also installed & configured TLP ; also wanted to use CPUfreq to lower the cpu's frequency when not really required... but found out that since kernel 3.16 isn't avaliable on Ubuntu-based distros... plus... it isn't really necessary, as the new kernel does a real nice job :) . Funny enough, on Debian-based distros you can update the kernel to the latest version ( 3.17 for example ) , apply all aforementioned operations + add cpu-freq ... and it really improves your battery life ^__^ .

And then... Majaro LXQT arrived ^__^ ... it was the first distro showing almost 2 hours battery life right from the start  . Not sure if i'll be able to do better as i'm still quite unexperienced with Arch environments .... for the time being... but that was certainly a promising start .

Thanks Maerskian, yea I tried Cairo, only found it recently, but decided I didn't want to risk the look I have now, which thinking about it is kinda silly as I use Backup and Timeshift to restore if I need to, hmm :) I think my reasoning there was accidentally losing my login greeter or desktop settings again, this has happened a few times and I was suddenly stuck with those awful Ubuntu panels all over the place (shudder) :)

I love Zorin to bits to and like you I just can't wait till 12 LTS arrives, then I'll take a weekend and start with a fresh system and mess with Cairo a bit
I also came from Windows and it was the best decision I ever made (computer wise) I've never heard of Deepin but gonna look at that now, not that I'd ever stray far from Zorin mind, since it's my first Linux and now I have it partially under control I'm sticking with it for good.

I see you found a wallpaper with the the same colours, nice and the middle of that processor is just screaming for a Zorin Z in it :)

I'm definitely sticking to Cairo . It's the most customizable dock i've found so far ... and allows you to do absolutely gorgeous beauties like this one ( not mine, but aiming to go for something similar soon :D ) :

By the way... could somebody share the magick trick to do a reverse search ? I'd love to get that bottle-floating-background ^__^

I'm really looking forward to it . Love the fact they finally included more colours besides the classical blue. Don't get me wrong, i love the original zorin-blue ... but i also happen to install & spread the word about Zorin a lot, and one of the most common ( and astonishing ) complaints i always heard .... was precisely that they couldn't stand everything being so blueish  ... not exactly a sound argument, but now with red/green/orange/gray to choose ... there's no more excuses :D ... you can turn your desktop on something on something like this :

Image

within just a few seconds. Simple but visually attractive .

By the way, if anybody could point me out to 1920X1080 desktop backgrounds that could combine with red/green/orange/grey i'd be most thankful :D . I was thinking on going with fruits first; need to locate nice HD pictures of green apples, strawberries , clmentines ? ... hmmm... not sure what fits more with grey . Classic-blue seems to blend perfectly well with futuristic / technology / blue-lighted cities/buildings/houses ...

I also came from Windows and it was the best decision I ever made (computer wise) I've never heard of Deepin but gonna look at that now, not that I'd ever stray far from Zorin mind, since it's my first Linux and now I have it partially under control I'm sticking with it for good.

My first contact with Linux was like 16 years ago. It was with SUSE 6 ... or 7 , but that was still too "green" for daily use. Re-started 4 ( maybe 5? ) years ago and Zorin catched my eye quickly :) . My previous ( and quite older ) computer always fighted back with Ubuntu based distros ... although LXLE worked fine for a while ( until it suddenly started going slower & slower ) but in the end, had to stick to Debian... and later to RoboLinux ( Debian Based + LXDE ) that was the one that finally worked fine . On the meanwhile, always had Zorin installed on my laptop and on my secondary ( slightly newer than my older main computer ) computer.

I'm aware many people around here is still in love with Zorin 6 looks... but must confess Zorin 7 was the one for me... and really glad it's still that way :D .

Deepin is really nice, ideal for beginners... i'd say... even more than Zorin... because everything is way too easy... just a couple clicks away, plus is quite beautiful, the Deepin store is better ( looks & faster ) than Ubuntu's , since it's based on Debian is lighter and for some reason don't fight back with some mono-core older computers , etc, etc...

On the other hand... not everything is so nice :

- It's so easy to use that i personally get bored .
- ( this is the biggest downside IMHO ) : doesn't seem to be very customizable ... what you see is what you get . Surely you can modify it if you want... but doesn't look easy nor quick to do... for that matter, it'd be better to use any other distro if you want to modify so much things . Essentially, the biggest selling point ( ready-to-use-as-it-is ) can also be what turns you away.

That said... still think is ideal for beginners... and would even say it looks quite nice on laptops too ^__^ ; anyways, i'll stick to Zorin ... won't get tired of saying : i can't wait for Zorin OS12 !!!!

I see you found a wallpaper with the the same colours, nice and the middle of that processor is just screaming for a Zorin Z in it :)

Now you mention it... you're absolutely right ! If only i had the skill to do it properly... not just a logo copy-paste over the cpu ... IMHO that logo would need something like a light metallic texture to blend with the picture. Maybe i should research about it .

This is my latest desktop, again the Wallpaper is straight out of Google and nothing changed from the previous one, but damn I like the look :)

My only complain... if i'm allowed to :) is... don't you have way too many clocks over there ? 8-)

Here you go:

Easily found by using the search term - "ship in a bottle wallpaper" with duckduckgo search engine and then select 'images':

O__O Thanks a million !

And here i was, thinking you were using some kind of complicated trick or even using some app i never heard about

Thank you very much.

Funny enough, the wallpapers website where that background was located.... is probably the best one i've seen in a good while ! Love dozens of backgrounds from there , and i'm quite picky ^__^

Can't thank you enough ;-)

I'm definitely sticking to Cairo . It's the most customizable dock i've found so far ... and allows you to do absolutely gorgeous beauties like this one ( not mine, but aiming to go for something similar soon :D ) :

By the way... could somebody share the magick trick to do a reverse search ? I'd love to get that bottle-floating-background ^__^

I love Zorin to bits to and like you I just can't wait till 12 LTS arrives, then I'll take a weekend and start with a fresh system and mess with Cairo a bit

I'm really looking forward to it . Love the fact they finally included more colours besides the classical blue. Don't get me wrong, i love the original zorin-blue ... but i also happen to install & spread the word about Zorin a lot, and one of the most common ( and astonishing ) complaints i always heard .... was precisely that they couldn't stand everything being so blueish  ... not exactly a sound argument, but now with red/green/orange/gray to choose ... there's no more excuses :D ... you can turn your desktop on something on something like this :

within just a few seconds.

Wow I think I'm sold on Cairo those desktops look amazing I'll definitely have a go at that.
As for other distros I probably wont use it but I might try and migrate my folks one day, though I dare say they might resist :)
I had a look for metallic Zorin Logo's there's one used on ebay but that's about it, I think you might need to dabble in Gimp a bit lol.
clocks? hmm yes I'll revisit that to :)

Just thought I would share with you my current theming - have had to resort to Zorin (no effects) because the top of the Menu now appears below the Z Menu button! (after playing with Compiz settings = bad idea!).

Notice that I have got a Cinammon XP theme available as I installed the Cinnamon Repo to have Cinnamon DE as an option - Achieved the look using Tweak Tool under Preferences, and 'GTk-Ch Theme' (GTK 2 Theme Changer)
I like the way the Opera top bar 'reflects' the look of Zorin AWN theming of the AWN Panel:
