[SOLVED] zorin 9 - no splash screen at start up,

When I start Zorin 9 on my Lenovo laptop with Celeron processor I see the Lenovo screen, then the screen gets blank for 18 seconds and then follows a dark screen with a short interruption of a blue screen announcing Zorin in small print.

The total start up process takes about 55 seconds.

At shutdown the Zorin 9 splash screen is shown.

Zorin 9 is performing fine, but it is annoying that at starting up I have to see a blank screen for 18 seconds.

Can someone suggest a simple way to improve the situation?

what graphics card do you have?.

Have you installed any drivers for it?.

The laptop has Intel HD Graphics.

I have just this morning found an acceptable solution.

I used the program Zorin Splash Manager and choose Zorin-Plymouth to be applied.

Now, when I start I get after the Lenovo announcement a black screen until Zorin desktop screen appears.

Okay, I miss the Zorin splash, but so be it. I am quite happy with Zorin 9 performance.

That is related to Intel HD Graphigs driver that it shows only blank screen some time period. I have that same Lenovo laptop and some update installed that "Intel (R) Bay Trail" graphics driver there. After that it does not show any more Zorin logo, only blank and then black. Before that update it worked ok. showing "Z logo" on blue background. I have not any solution to make it better now. I believe that installing the original driver of Zorin 9 could bring it back.

Your problem keeps pointing to [ Grub2 ]
Revert to [ Grub ] and you shouldn't have those problems afterward !!!!
I found it best practice to remove the said [ Graphics Driver ]
Before reverting from [ Grub2 ] to [ Grub ] <> [ Grub ] to [ Grub2 ]

The laptop works under 2.02~beta2-9ubuntu1.1.

Presently I can live with the inconvenience of a prolonged black screen at startup.

I hope that the further development of the beta2-grub will solve the problem in due time.

My skills are not enough to try and manipulate the graphics driver or grub.

I have returned somewhat earlier then expected and I did run to-day:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

Regrettable, no avail.

Once again I tried the splash screen manager choosing zorin.plymouth.

When starting up the laptop I see no zorin splash screen and
the screen remains black, but at shutdown the name of zorin wwwas correctly
displayed against blue background.

Can't remember if Zorin uses light-dm (light desktop manager) or gdm (gnome desktop manager). Wondering if light dm might solve the issue but may change the look of login? Wolfman?

My no-splash-screen problem can be regarded as “resolved”.

In the past few weeks I tried to get rid of the no-splash-screen problem.

Not hampered by too much solid knowledge I repeatedly succeeded in making a mess and I had to re-install Zorin 9 twice by means of the USB stick that I made 3 months ago.

Each time I choose to update during installation and to execute Software Updater immediately after
completion of the installation.

To-day I did a last wild effort to solve the problem, but no way.

Again I had to re-install Zorin 9, but now for the last time, and again using the stick made in May 2015.

After completion af the install process I had to restart and this time my attention was drawn by the fact that Zorin boot splash screen was displayed.

After completion of the restart I choose to shutdown and to made a full fresh start. Again the boot splash was displayed correctly.

From this experience I must conclude that most probably executing the Software Updater is causing the “no-splash-problem”. From now on I will only apply security updates and updates relating to browser and email client.

I am happy that my laptop is now opening with a decent screen display.

I ran Software Updater for security updates only.

The splash problem re-appeared.

Now it is clear where the problem originates.

Indeed, I used a wired connection to the main server and updating went fluently as usual.

Yesterday I tried again to solve the problem.


I downloaded a fresh copy of zorin-os-9.1-core-64 iso and made a

bootable stick.


I installed this version and started Software Updater.


After some time it was reported that no updates were found.


The no-splash-problem that I experienced when I had zorin-9-core-32

seemed solved.


However, the computer was noticeable slower, wifi failed, and launching

Irfanview from Wine failed too.


The earlier zorin-9-core-32 had always been fast and flawlessly.


I decided to re-install Zorin 9 using the latest 32-bit iso version from the Zorin

OS website as the latest version would likely be to require no or less updates.


Indeed the number of updates after installation was about 30 percent lower,

but the splash problem ( blank screen followed by dark screen)

re-appeared.


Strangely, turning the white screen part into dark (as done before) did not

succeed as the downloaded and installed Zorin Splash Manager 1.2 now

refused to select the Zorin.plymouth alternative.


To complete the re-installation I executed

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f


This is how matters stand. The Lenovo laptop is again working fine and

the blank splash is something to live with for the time being.

I have further investigated the no splash problem and I think that Henriolavi is right in identifying Intel HD Graphics as the source of the problem.

It seems that a Kernel update should be made to solve it.

smitjrh > I told someone the same thing way over a year ago about something similar relative to the Intel drivers.
More than likely that is your culprit.
One version works great...then they come out with a newer version that is garbage !!!!

I kept looking for a solution and this morning I found
a way to get rid of the blank/black screen at boot up.

In Grub …. etc/default/grub I had earlier inserted the resolution
of my laptop screen being

GRUB_GFXMODE=1366x768

Now I added

GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1366x768

All other settings such as “quiet splash” remained unaltered.

Apparently (as I understand it) the setting of GFXPAYLOAD
at 1366x768 instead of “auto”, “text” or “keep” makes the system open
displaying text and color without having reached its graphics mode.

When I start my laptop I get after the Lenovo opening a “Zorin blue” screen
displaying the text “Zorin OS 9”.

It took some time but now my Lenovo B50-30 is booting up as desired.
