Skype won't install

JimA

Sun Feb 09, 2014 4:00:49 am

I have successfully run skype on ubuntu before, but can't find the solution to installing it on Zorin. Has anyone actually succeeded and got it working?

I download from the following site - http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-linux/ - but always end up with this error message:-

Dependency is not satisfiable: libqt4-network (>= 4:4.5.3)

Any clues as to what this actually means?

Hi,

open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) and paste the following command:

Code:
sudo apt-get install skype

and it shouid install from the Ubuntu repositories!.

If you are using Zorin 8, you may have a problem with Skype as do I, I use Zorin 6 for Skyping and it runs fine!.

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2023

You are advised to install this package if not already installed in Zorin 8:

Code:
sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins:i386

And also run this command:

Code:
Exec=/usr/bin/env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 /usr/bin/skype

Thanks Wolfman.

Unfortunately that doesn't work.

I tried something like that before, after following advice on another forum concerned with Ubuntu.

This is the result i get when following your suggestion, and I'm a bit lost with this to be honest, hence the last ditch request I made earlier:-

sudo apt-get install skype
[sudo] password for jim:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

Hi JimA,

I noticed in your last post at the bottom "E: broken packages".

Please check your Update Settings points to 'Main Server' and then open Synaptic Package Manager (if using the Win 7 look just type in 'synaptic' to search for it - then select it - it should be the only return in the menu window.
Once opened, select "Fix Broken Packages" then try Wolfman's advice once more.

If all else fails you could try jitsi instead https://jitsi.org/ - at least Microsoft won't be eavesdropping if you have jitsi instead! ;) :D

I didn't get the E broken packages either.

I already did the fix broken packages. Doesn't make any difference. Nor does re-installing Zorin 6 from scratch make any difference either. I'm not in a hurry to do that again.

I need to use skype, so looks like back to Windows for me.

Just for clarity, which version of Zorin are you working with, 6 or 8? For 8 the solution appears to be here:

Hi,

paste this command in a terminal then run the other command for updating I posted earlier:

Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

Let us know what happens.

I'm using skype 6, as mentioned in post Sun Feb 09, 2014 5:52 pm

Have tried Wolfman dpkg instruction, but it makes no difference at all.

Hi,

did you do a disk install and follow this advice?:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4771

Start your PC and at the grub menu; select "Advanced Options" and then select "Recovery Mode", a menu will appear, firstly you need to activate "Network", once that is active, choose "root" and then type the following command:

Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

then:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

then:

Code:
sudo apt-get install skype

Once that is done, press Ctrl + Alt +Del and restart your PC.

If you didn't burn the disk at the slowest possible speed, you need to reburn it at the slowest speed possible !.

Let us kow how you get on.

It was a pen drive install.

Thank you very much for the suggestions, I'll try them and report back afterwards.

The quick answer is that I cannot follow the instructions exactly.

After selecting recovery mode, the network selection is actually called "netroot". Selecting this results in a request for the root password. I have no idea what that would be and it is therefore impassable. My log-in password does not work, nor any other obvious ones I tried. The only exit is control-D.

The same password request comes up whichever menu selection is chosen, apart from resume normal boot. However normal boot does not work. It locks in to a log-in statement and again I have no idea what should be entered.

I tried the listed procedures in terminal. sudo dpkg runs without any script and returns with the prompt. The sudo apt-get update results in lots of not founds scolling up the screen followed by heaps of failures and error 404's.

sudo install skype produces exactly the same result as previously.

I have the impression there are loads of defects in this version. I couldn't get Firefox to install either, although Chrome runs fine apart from some cert issues.

I think I have to give version 8 of Zorin a try before I give up. It will take a while before I can download and run.

Hi,

start in recovery mode and first click on Network and then on DPKG, restart with Ctrl + Alt + Del, don't click on resume!.

Let us know if that helps.

I don't know where you are getting "Netroot" from, there is no such option in the recovery menu?.

I had this issue quite some time ago, and I was able to fix it however I am failing to be able to reproduce the issue now.
Are you using 32 or 64 bit version of Zorin, and are you using Core, or Educational ? (It comes preinstalling in the ULT version)

try doing this.
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo apt-get install -f skype

and if that doesn't work... let me know which version and what arch you are using, and I'll install in a VM and let you know what I find.

JimA

Hi Wolfman,

Your version must be different to mine.

I downloaded it from the Zorin site quite recently. It says 32 bit 6.4 is the standard version and that's what I downloaded :-
MD5sums: 3f26dccc98f9ee48da13dfb1cbfd20e5

I've attached a snapshot of my screen which clearly shows netroot.

netroot.jpg

One of the problems I find when troubleshooting like this is that people often don't believe what you report back - but anyway, there it is. There is no network option in the recovery menu, period.

I don't know what to say about this version of Zorin. Obviously there are inconsistencies. When I ran Ubuntu a couple of years ago it ran skype no problem, and that was on quite a slow machine. I thought Zorin was a nice user friendly front end, but it's not proving to be so far. If Linux op systems did what is claimed they do then Windows would be quickly wiped out, but they don't. Long way to go I'm afraid. I've downloaded V8 but can't install it yet because I am reliant on the machine working at the moment.

Hi Linx,

I am using the 32 bit core version. This is the page I downloaded from:-

http://zorin-os.com/free6.html

I tried your procedure, but the same results as before. There are loads of 404 errors and such-like that go whizzing past on the screen. I've captured it all and put into a text file. You might be able to make a lot more sense of it than I can, so I have attached it - or rather I tried to but it didn't work. Have copied it below instead, sorry about the length.

Hi Jim,

try changing your Software Sources Settings per the guide below, you are getting the 404 errors because APT cannot connect to the download server, pick a location near you and try updating again:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

see this section: Changing your software sources download location:

Hey Wolfman,

That was rather revealing.

It checked 368 possibilities and finally came back with the message "No suitable download server was found".

I've never had anything like that before. Obviously on the right track though.

Support ain't great is it. I do feel like this whole exercise has taken me up a blind alley. So many differences between what you and I have and now this. I'll see if I can get to the bottom of it though.

Hi Jim, what I found concerning were all those pointers to 'Natty Narwhal' repositories - Zorin 6.x was based on 'Precise Pangolin' with a few possible pointers to the 'O Ocelot' (can't remember the code name for Ubuntu 11.10! :D ).

I would try and get Zorin 6.0 from one of these repos - I haven't got it currently installed - debating on moving Windows 8.1 to the drive that has Zorin 8 RC so I can get more than one GNU/Linux on the drive that Win 8.1 is hogging!

http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/zorin/6/

http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/zorin/6/

http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/zorin/6/

Only use this source as last resort:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/zorin/6/ (see this post as to why: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6180

I don't think I tried 6.4 - I tried 6.2 but went back to 6.0.

What you have to bear in mind is that Zorin is a 'fork' of Ubuntu and sometimes the issues can be to do with the core software on which it is based!

Hope my posting helps! :D

PS For Downloads I only use Firefox now with the Add-on - DownThemAll! - this has it's own built-in md5, SHA key checker - so there should be no need to use winmd5sum in Windows or 'md5sum ... *,iso' in GNU/Linux!
