All was fine before I upgraded to 12.2 from ?. The monitor comes on fine from boot. But now, when the pc comes out of suspend, the monitor does not turn on. I have tried different solutions proposed in Linux forums to no avail. Anyone out there with the same problem and a solution bearing in mind I'm a noobie. Thanks!

No! But I have no idea how to check if gnome-settings-daemons is getting a signal by running xtrace (which I have just installed) against it.

Laptop or desktop?
My laptop seems to behave differently when on battery than when plugged in, sometimes an error notification when I open the lid on battery I think from memory but haven't paid that much attention as it is normally plugged in and that works fine regardless if I suspend it myself, let the power manager timer run or close the lid.
You could try changing some settings and see if that helps to 'jog it memory' so to speak.
