Nvidia whiteout /blackout problem fix & driver install guide

Wolfman

Thu Jul 19, 2012 7:31:09 am

Hi all,

you should read the whole thread if you want to install Nvidia drivers!.

Problem:

The screen goes white or black (Zorin 6 & 8) when more than one window is open, this is something to do with Compiz, the windows turn white /black when more than one window is open and you try to switch between them.

Fix:

Open CompizConfig Settings Manager > Effects > Animations > Focus Animation > Highlight where it says "Focus Effect" - "Dodge" > Edit > Focus Effect > Select "None" > Close

Multi-monitor support:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaMultiMonitors

Important 1:

Before commencing with the Nvidia driver installation, please check that you are installing the correct drivers for your type of Nvidia graphics card, some older Nvidia cards may require "Legacy Support" (driver version 173 for example) and are possibly not supported by any of the 304/319/331 drivers listed below!:

Important 2:

Even though your drivers may show in the lists, this is not to say that you won't have problems so make a note of the driver package name you are installing and the corresponding removal command listed below!. Follow the instructions for removal in "Recovery Mode" which are also listed below!.

http://www.nvidia.com/page/support.html

To find out what Nvidia card you have, open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) and paste the following command:

Code:
lspci

This will give you a readout like the pic below and it is in the "VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 430] (rev a1)" part we are interested in:
vga info.jpg

Please copy and paste the following commands according to the driver you wish to install in a terminal, (Ctrl + Alt + t) press enter after the command and put in your password which WILL NOT SHOW while you type!. And see the list of supported cards at the bottom of this post which are listed by version number in numerical order!. Your graphics card may show up in more than one list!.

For the recommended version (nvidia-current):

Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

For version 173 (older cards)

Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-173

For version 304.

Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-304

For the version 319.

Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-319

For version 331.

Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331

(The above commands will auto-install any necessary dependencies!)

Then restart your PC!.

It is important to restart your PC in "Recovery Mode" and select "Network" (Cable Only!!) and then run "DPKG" in case there are any updates and after you have done the updates (Mesa, Xorg etc!), restart your PC with Ctrl + Alt + Del, don't click on "Resume" !!.

If the above doesn't work for whatever reason, as soon as you reboot your PC, start Synaptic > Reload > Mark All Upgrades > Apply and then restart your PC again!. (Yes! I know!!)

If your menu is also going blank when it shouldn't, right click the Zorin menu button > Edit > System Tools > Administration > and take out the tick next to "Nvidia X Server Settings.
Main Menu_016.jpg

Removing Drivers:

To remove the Nvidia drivers, open a terminal and paste this command and then restart and update your system afterwards:

Code:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current nvidia-settings

Or depending on what drivers you have installed, lets use version 304 as our example:

Code:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-304 nvidia-settings-304

Ideally the above command should be done at root level in the recovery menu, start your PC in "Recovery Mode" and activate "Network" (a network cable is required!) then click on "root" and enter the command, restart your PC with Ctrl + Alt + Del, don't click on "Resume"!.

It is important to restart your PC again in "Recovery Mode" and select "Network" (Cable Only!!) and then run "DPKG" as there will be updates and after you have done the updates (Mesa, Xorg and possibly the "nouveau-firmware" for GeForce6 and above etc!), restart your PC with Ctrl + Alt + Del, don't click on "Resume" !!.

If the above doesn't work for whatever reason, as soon as you reboot your PC, start Synaptic > Reload > Mark All Upgrades > Apply and then restart your PC again!. (Yes! I know!!)

Alternative removal options:

Another way to remove the drivers you don't want is to boot into an older kernel and still use a normal graphical interface to do so as the drivers you last installed will only affect the main last kernel you updated. Do the following:

Boot your PC and at the Grub menu, select "Advanced Options" (2nd in the list):
grub.1.jpg
grub.1.jpg (35.28 KiB)

Then select "Previous Linux Versions" and select an older kernel and you should be able to boot normally into that:
g2_submenu.jpg

Once your PC has started, you use the terminal or Synaptic package manager to remove and install a different driver and don't forget to restart and update again once restarted!.

this thread has been updated!!!!.

Wolfman

Since the last post I have lost the complete system and have spent several days rebuilding.
Not even there yet. This last re-install I have no ability to set the apple look. The look changer
has only the one for the free version. I am using the the Zorin OS 6.2 Ultimate. This is a serious
problem for me. After last re-install, where it says to reboot, I selected the button and opened the
dvd tray. The screen went white, and hard drive activity for a good twenty minutes. Then I turned
the machine off at it start/stop button. Then went Recovery mode. Did the network -> DPKG.
after another 10 to 15 minutes of real work, I was done. Then the ctrl alt del restart. I did notice
something during this DPKG, most y/N are of this type, however at least 1 is Y/n type. While
the casual user would miss this change, advanced users will not most of the time. They all need
to be consistant.
Now CCSM is another bucket of worms. alt-tab works in non nvida current driver, but with current
Nvidia driver, it is an abomination. Installed Nvidia as descriped earlier with an Recover mode using
network, dpkg and reboot ctl alt del methos. The for the next two to three reboots
System Tool -> Administration menu is not there. Finally it does reappear. This is not good.
Now I need a *.deb to reinstall look changer for all desktops please. Will continue with ccsm to find
the problem. It appears to be a memory issue, ccsm does try to do the alt tab before a system wide
lockup.

Hi Rick,

sorry but I have only just seen this as you should have posted in "Help & Support".

Sounds like you have a mess on your hands!!.

Do the following:

1. Restart in recovery mode and run "FSCK" then restart again using Ctrl + Alt+ Del.

2. Select recovery mode again and this time select "Drop to root shell" and type the following command:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

and once done, restart again.

3. In recovery mode for the 3rd time, activate "Network" and then "DPKG" and say "Y" when asked, restart again and this time normally and see what happens.

Did you install the pacakges "kde-full and gnome" ???. If not; paste this command in a terminal and restart your PC afterwards:

sudo apt-get install kde-full gnome

Let us know how you get on.

Regards Wolfman :D

Added all major Nvidia graphic cards list so you can see if your card is supported by what driver!. :D

***Note to everyone***
Before you jump by seeing your card number on the list: PLEASE NOTE THAT CARDS WITH AN OEM DESIGNATION ARE INTERNALLY DIFFERENT AND MAY NOT BE SUPPORTED BY DRIVERS! THIS IS CONFIRMED ON THE GT 620 (OEM) failing to use the 319 driver on these cards WILL RESULT IN A BLACK SCREEN.

Edit: fixed driver number to 319 heh, heh, heh.

Hi I think you mean 319 - 304 should be ok for you - I am just annoyed that you have to turn acceleration off to get rid of 'smurfville'! - so I am back to Nouveau and NOT missing nVidia one bit!

Hi Wolfman, no, I think I did a reinstall - even tried earlier kernels but that was a week ago now - finally got around to trying the updated 304 drivers - not teste don video yet - using Dark Table the nouveau drivers crashed out so back trying nvidia again but heartbleed has got my gnome-look account now (I could be wrong) as I am now locked out! :(

wolf you kinda missed the point there. as i had said, the cards labeled as OEM ARE NOT the same card as the ones not labeled OEM
Geforce GT 620 != Geforce GT 620 OEM
they are in fact different cards. (OEM is the sketchy card)

The guts are rather different.
mainly that the OEM model has ram that's slower than my desktop ram XD (Well, ok not really GPU memory is always faster per clock)

Hi botcrusher,

I understood what you said and this is why I put warnings on the page so people make sure that they select the correct driver for their model, there are so many with almost the same name that is easy to select and install the wrong drivers!. But thankyou for making a point of it!.

The lists of the supported drivers was copied directly from the Nvidia support pages so they should be correct one would think?, or wouldn't one?. :D

I installed the nvidia drivers for my GForce FX 5500, which has the legacy 173 drivers....the screen is now black and I can't do anything with this....running Zorin OS 9 core 32 bit...machine is a Compaq Presario, with a AMD Sempron 3100+ 2GB mem 80GB HDD. What else can I do except to try and unistall these....apparently they're not working....thanks

Wolfman

Thu Jul 24, 2014 8:39:54 am

Hi Andrew,

assuming you installed the "nvidia-173" (legacy) package, restart yor PC in recovery mode and activate "Network" ( a network cable connection is required), then go to "root shell" and type the following commands:

Code:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-173 && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

(The above command should be typed as written above!)

Then restart your PC with Ctrl + Alt + Del, do not click on resume!.

Let us know how you get on. :D

Andrew

Sun Aug 10, 2014 4:19:07 pm

Hello Wolfman,

Tried both methods and both ways get me a black screen, no desktop.....so I end up going back in using your methods prior to actual booting into the desktop itself, and undoing everything....so it's currently using the stock drivers that come with the OS, can't use either propriatery drivers on that particular machine....strangly enough (stratching my head :? )

Thank you for your assistance, I don't know what else to do....

Wolfman

Tue Aug 12, 2014 7:26:45 am

Hi Andrew,

I assume that your rig won't work with any Nvidia drivers and you should stick with the opensource pre-installed drivers!.

Do you still have a black screen?, did you install/remove the 304 (nvidia-current) package which most likely won't help!.

You should wait and try Zorin Lite 9 when it comes out or go with Lubuntu on which Zorin Lite is based!.

GeForce 600M Series (Notebooks):

I'm back XD
I can confirm that no, the card does not work. Because the gt 620 (oem) IS NOT the same as the gt 620. I can only assume they meant to leave out the oem version, reading a changelog of the newest drive adds support for the oem version of some other 600's, but did not mention the 620 oem
I have reproduced the issue again after installing zorin OS 9.
Nvidia's naming scheme has always been a little cryptic (the gt 605 - 640 are actually previous gen fermi's that got renamed) and the oem cards are even stranger.
Could you please note that the oem cards may not work with that or the new current driver?
I just want to note that i have a gt 610 that does work with the current driver, (note that the 610 is only a lesser clocked real gt 620 with much less cuda cores)

t is important to restart your PC in "Recovery Mode" and select "Network" (Cable Only!!) and then run "DPKG" in case there are any updates and after you have done the updates (Mesa, Xorg etc!), restart your PC with Ctrl + Alt + Del, don't click on "Resume"

When I select "Network", I get
ModemManager [861]: <warn> Couldn't find support for device at 'sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0e.0/0000:02:08.0: not supported by any plugin

I suppose it can't find the ethernet adapter? But it works as it should when Zorin loads normally. I have internet access from the computer.
