[RESOLVED] Zorin OS 15.1 Feedback - Startup time

after 3 months of intense usage, I am really happy with Zorin OS. No annoying crashes, no complicated settings, very nice appearance, cool dark mode, clean interface so on. When I use other Linux distros, I feel that I am using something incomplete. But Zorin OS makes me feel that I use a premium OS. Especially detailed appearance settings have made me happy. I was tired of looking for useful and not outdated gnome extensions and adjust tweak settings.
Zorin os has only one issue that makes me crazy which is Startup time. It takes 4 minutes to be ready for opening a web browser. The login screen comes late already, but it is just a beginning. after I log in, it takes crazy time to open the desktop and be ready to do any task. Please try to decrease startup time. Because It is far away from being acceptable...

Those kind of start up times are not normal. Usually, something is causing an error and that slows things down. We should go over your error logs as a start and see if we can find anything there.

So you are saying that I am the only one who has such an issue, you have a faster startup? Well, I am willing to share any logs you want to see.

It takes a few seconds, maybe ten at most on a bad day.

If you could post the contents of your syslog. Easy method:
In terminal enter:

Then hit Edit: select all (if menubar is enabled) and ctrl+shift+c or right click and hit "copy"
Paste here.
In terminal- you can just close it after.

Alternatively, you could open a terminal and enter

pkexec <Your FIle Manager>

naming your preferred file manager without the <>brackets
and navigate to /var/log/syslog and open it with a text editor and copy the contents over to here that way.

Could you tell us the make and model of your Dell computer?

In terminal, can you enter

and tell us what GRUB_TIMEOUT= is set to? If it is 10 or 0, you will want to set it to 2.

You might check your start up applications for any killers that don't need to be loading. Recommend that torrent software not be included in start up but run by your command.
I use a conky to monitor i/o, temp and cpu process, so I know immediately if something is creating a memory leak, if something is running hot or if an i/o error occurs. I wonder if you shouldn't use one for a while just to check your system, as well.

That IS a long log... LOL... Mine is about 30 lines... It'll take some time to scan through it.

GRUB_TIMEOUT was 0 and I made it 2. Also I put nomodeset at the end as you said.

I think my startup apps are fine. But I can disable two of them?


I was using the System Monitor tool if I want to check something but I will use conky from now on. So far I didn't see any performance issue. it takes a few seconds for most applications to start but it is about the speed of HDD.

Why my logs are too long like that? take your time, no rush. And thank you for your effort in advance.

Ok, and you are running the 5.3.0 kernel- that is good. If it was older, I would recommend you roll it back to 4.15.0-78, but given your hardware, you don't want to do that. Stick with your KurrentKernel.

Ok, let's try that for boot time. If there is any trouble with it on reboot- hold left shift key as it boots and then go into the recovery and cmd line and sudo nano it back without nomodeset.

Yeah, gaming computers can run pretty hot. As long as you don't go over 65C.
I like conky because I can just glance right at it and if more than one monitor- it really helps. But any tool that you can pop up at will can do the same. As long as you keep an eye on that info, as it can help a LOT in knowing there's a problem immediately or in diagnosing one based on minimal information instead of no information.

That is an improvement over 4 minutes to get to your "ready to use" state, but watching the video, it does seem a little slow.
It's not too bad... and hardware and what you have loading up from boot will cause variance in load time. Gaming machines can always expect a slower boot time than a lightweight "just surfing the net" PC. But you seem to have a bit slower than I would expect from that, even.

I don't know. Under 1 minute is acceptable but more than 2 minutes is "too bad" for me My laptop ready to use in 15 seconds or less. I got your point, this is a gaming machine. But I can't get used to 2.30 min. I will buy an SSD then. Maybe to get rid of HDD solves my problem.

Maybe, I use SSD in one machine. But there has only been one respondent in the thread- let's see what others suggest, as well.

One of the articles suggest dropping GRUB boot time to 2 seconds - I would advise against this - would not drop it below 5 seconds - why? Because Zorin and most other Linux distros use Ext4 (Ext2 if SSD) - Ext4 is a journaling system, similar to NTFS - if you dropped the boot time of an NT Workstation below 5 seconds you could end up with a foo-bard system - because it was and is a journaling system!

After SSD, PC is ready in 30 seconds hell yeah!

yes we can
