I am one of those Windows XP users who migrated to Linux in April 2014, following support withdrawal for XP. I'm not a computer specialist (e.g. have no knowledge of computer code), though am able do all the usual hardware & software upgrades to computers when needed.
I dabbled with a few linux distros to see which suited me best & whittled this down to Linux-Lite and Zorin. Though Linux Lite is an excellent distro, it still presented basic difficulties (e.g. how to put trash can on desktop screen!!!) which were not an issue in zorin. Zorin was the most 'complete' OS I looked at, needing very little post-installation work beyond reducing swappiness & grub-time time-out, and removing non-essential services at start up, and installing some packages like i-player from synaptic, etc.
So I started with Zorin v6.4 Ultimate. Fantastic. Everything worked, first time out of the box. There was only a niggly reversion, that occurs from time-to-time, from Zorin blue to Ubuntu orange screen colours, but this can apparently be corrected in Ubuntu Tweaks.
I was then seduced by some zorin v9 reviews on Youtube and Zorin website itself, into getting the more up-to-date-version and so bought the v9 Ultimate. However, I'm disappointed. It is not as good as the 6.4 version and these are my reasons:
- I am able to load Windows 7 as a virtual machine in Oracle Virtualbox in v6.4 without any difficulty, but it doesn't work in v9 as a kernel driver appears to be missing (rc = -1908) - I tried deleting & reinstalling several times but to no avail
- you can choose a picture icon for login in 6 but this option doesn't exist in 9
- the blue "i" icon next to 'connection information' for the internet is in v6.4 is absent in v9
- I found the 'zorinised' mozilla/firefox screen very ugly, particularly the enormous font for the typed in search words - they are so big it's not possible to see beyond two or three words on the screen at any one time. I ended up removing mozilla/firefox as it introduced (soon after set up) a "najoomi.com" banner embedded in my desktop screen after switching off the internet connection, which I couldn't get rid of - it had urdu typescript. I ended up removing mozilla/firefox completely from v9 (downloaded chrome-browser instead) and this problem didn't reappear, though I also downloaded ESET internet security for Linux for added protection
- there are other appearance niggles/omissions in v9, but the Virtualbox problem mentioned above made me go back to the tried & tested v6.4 which I am now staying with until the v9 bugs have been ironed out.
I hope this feedback helps.
Kind regards
