I saw one of these Sony Vaio P11Z´s on a website and hunted one down, not knowing the difficulty people have with the Intel GMA 500 driver. Many people claim to be able to do many things with them but I personally have found that not to be exactly true. There are drivers available and workarounds out there but none worked for me with Windows 7. So, I decided to try many Linux variations. I wanted to use the laptop primarily for surfing the net and the occasional viewing of videos (on hd and youtube).
After much trial and error I found that Zorin OS 11 lite to be the best out of the box fit for the laptop. Sound and video playback was good, no choppiness (OK not HD viewing but on a small screen it is not important to me). Installed smplayer for hard drive video playback.
Just wanted to say thanks to the Zorin team for making this old laptop useable again.
(of course, any tips to improve HD playback much appreciated)
