Secure Boot has arrived! Warning!

I found this article quite interesting and informative, although I do not propose to admit understand the full consequences of the "shim".

I read the article too. I think my solution will be used computers before secure boot, or buying a ZaReason or System 76 computer new. I will probably go with ZaReason if new. Both make great computers, but System 76's seem budget busting. I also like that ZaReason gives you more options. It seems they will install almost any Linux OS you want, or none at all. System 76 basically comes with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. While you can change to any Linux OS you want or dual boot, having one OS pre-installed would be great because all the hardware would be optimized for what you requested. I also read an interesting article that explains buying a Win computer only fuels Microsoft and their monoplistic behavior even if you wipe it out and use Linux. The point was you are still sending Microsoft money. I can't find the article again but it makes sense. It also said Linux computers seem a bit more expensive, but when you look at the hardware you are getting, they really are not at all.

From a business point of view - what a brilliant roundabout way to get rid of the competitors and make more money. Nice..

BUT

From a personal point of view - What the!! Is linux really getting to them and will I be able to buy an alternative laptop/PC with out secure boot and dare I say a linux secure boot . PS: I self built all my desktops but laptops are a little bit more difficult but can be done via ebay (can I say that - if not then - online auction sites) and the local recycle centre. .

What next for Windows 9 - If I try to put linux on the machine will I be taser stunned or will itself destruct it self?

I recently boughta Lenovo G585. Rather than a special keystroke to access the BIOS, it has two adjacent power on buttons. The smaller one boots the machine into the BIOS where enabling legacy boot up can be chosen to avoid the 'secure boot'. I removed Windows 8 and installed several versions of Linux (one being Zorin). I haven't purchased a new machine in quite some time and had not encountered the UEFI secure boot before. It irritated me.
