I started my journey to find out what Zorin stood for because heck, it's such a cool name. It reminds me of some forgotten 80's sci-fi super hero at the edge of my memory. Er.. but in a good way. Zorin is the very cool surname of Zorin OS's creator Artyom Zorin. I thought it was so cool, I started digging.

Zorin as a word is not found in any language that I can find.

Wikipedia seems to only want to tell me about Zorins who were from the Soviet Union. They have a nice list too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorin

Sergey Semyonovich Zorin (1891–1937), First Secretary of the Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Petrograd, 1919-1921
Simcha Zorin (1902–1974), Soviet Jewish partisan in World War II
Valerian Zorin (1902–1986), Soviet diplomat
Yuriy Zorin (born 1947), Russian athlete

Each of these individuals have interesting stories to tell or teach, check them out.

Wikipedia list at least two popular fictitious characters with the name Zorin

Zorin Blitz, fictional Nazi vampire from Hellsing, a manga by Kouta Hirano - This one is almost too creepy to contemplate.

Max Zorin, fictional James Bond character - This one is actually Epic. Christopher Walken plays Zorin, CEO of Zorin Industries and generally all around bad dude, in James Bonds A View to a Kill. They even have a cool fictional Zorin Industries website you can visit! http://zorinindustries.co.uk/

It would be cool to think a Linux distro could be influenced by science fiction. My vote would be a Linux distro plugged right into the Heart of the Tardis. Amy Pond and Clara Oswald, yeah babes, you're coming with me. (darn this is a long year, I can't wait for August 23rd and the new season of Doctor Who!)

Google searching, I found many Zorins with the name used both as a surname or as a first name. I decided to search for the origin of Zorin but there isn't a lot of information on the name that I can find. Perhaps this information is just not in English or I don't know where to find it. There are some genealogies of some Zorin families on various sites like Ancestry.com.

"Zora" is a Slavonic word and means "dawn". One of it's masculine forms is Zorin. http://www.behindthename.com/name/zora/comments (In many places the words for dawn also mean light or illumination)

At least one place for baby names lists Zorin as a male name being Sanskrit in origin with the meanings of strong and powerful. http://www.top-100-baby-names-search.co ... names.html

I even found a Zorin town in Russia http://www.worldrouteplanner.com/europe ... ray/zorin/ This site uses google maps for a nice picture. (Zoom in)

Zorin's are in good company with diplomats, athletes, playwrights (Dmitrii Ivanovich Zorin) and war heroes. I didn't find out all I wanted to know about the name but I met some interesting Zorins along the way. I enjoyed the exercise and plan to dig more tomorrow. Thank you Zorins - Everywhere.
