I've got this laptop I've been playing around with. So far, this is what I've done to it.

CPU was originally a 266MHz, but I replaced that was an AMD K-6 500MHz chip, and it's showing running at 360MHz.

The on board memory is 80 megs, and you could add another 80 for a whopping total of 160. I added a stick of 512 megs, and now that is showing at 288 megs of Ram.

The original hard drive was 13 gigs, and I replaced that with a 35 gig HD. (The largest I could find for that laptop)

The origial O.S. was Windows 95 but I got XP to run on it. But it's really slow. (I'm sure you could guess that)

It only has a CD-ROM, so I can't make a DVD and install Zorin that way. And it only has one USB port, which I'm sure is a USB 1.0 version. The largest CD I can find to download Zorin is 700MB, but Zorin Lite is almost 800MB. I didn't see an option to boot from the USB in Bios, so I don't think that would work.

So, my question is, how do I install Zorin Lite on this computer?

I've pretty much maxed out this computer, which is what I wanted to do, but I think Zorin might be a little faster than XP. Also I'd like to try and dual boot this one too.

Oh yeah, I've also got a Trendnet wireless PC card installed on it so I can get on the internet with it. The only other port it has is for dialup.

Hi, hve you checked with the Compaq site that you have the most up-to-date version of the BIOS that was released? If you have I would use Unetbootin of Universal bootloader to install Zorin to USB. Then download PLOP boot manager from here:

http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/index.html

Burn to CD - and get machine to boot to CD first with PLOP boot manager in so you can install using USB. :D

If Zorin Lite will not run here are som alternatives:

LXLE 12.04.4 revisited (http://lxle.net)
Slax (http://www.slax.org/)
LinuxLite (https://www.linuxliteos.com/)

or any listed here:

If you intend to dual-boot (Windows and Linux?) I would advise not running anything that is no longer supported by M$ unless the network device is disabled! For dual-booting, install using EasyBCD:

How to here:

Cool, thanks!

Maybe I won't do the dual boot thing and just run Zorin Lite.

Dude > Don't expect to much out of that old cave dweller.
Even with Zorin OS 9 Lite.
It will be good to play around with as a learning experience.
But for the productive part.... :?: :?: :?: :?: [ Speed ]
Just wanted to tell about the situation straight forward.
Hope you at least get it running to tinker !!!! :D :D

Yup, that's why I started playing around with it. A learning tool and to see how far I could go with it. It's cool to see a computer almost 20 years old still running, at least for me. I've barely started to learn about Linux. Still have no idea on some of this stuff.
