Hello,
You'd better install synaptic to be able to scout the repositories because of the many dependencies available. So, in a terminal (CTRL + ALT + T)
Code:
sudo apt install synaptic

or for example for Thunderbird
Code:
sudo apt install thunderbird

Sorry, but I have no idea about Skype

For Skype you need to go to the Skype download page for Linux:

https://www.skype.com/en/download-skype ... for-linux/

On the drop-down list where it says, choose your distribution, choose Ubuntu 12.04 - Yes Microsoft is way behind with the GNU's
