Had a quick Google on this but there doesn't seem to be much listed, it could possibly be a hard drive space error, or the amount of space you are allocating /root. does Zorin OS 12.1 Core install ok? if not can you post the complete error message.

Are you installing directly to the hard driver or are you using WUBI?:

I suspect you have a graphics card issue - can you give information on your machine details as much as possible please? Thanks. - See here:

Seeing that you have a low spec graphics card this is an old Notebook (= misnomer, Laptop). I think the specs of your machine are probably too low to handle that graphics of Gnome Shell which are very intensive. I would advise you to wait for the release of Zorin 12 Lite and simply search for Education software in the Software channel after it is released - still in production at present:

http://zoringroup.com/blog/2017/03/21/z ... downloads/ - "We’re also excited to be working on Zorin OS 12 Lite, which will be featuring a new XFCE-based desktop environment designed to be more user friendly than ever before. We’re planning to give you our first sneak peek of Zorin OS 12 Lite within the next few weeks."

Give SolydX community Stable edition which uses XFCE - that should give you an indication of how Zorin 12 Lite should run on your machine.

https://solydxk.com/

Failing that give Qelitu a try:

Try the community SolydX stable 32-bit - when you get opportunity to edit the bootsplash, add 'nomodeset xforcevesa noapic' and see if that gets things sorted. I suspect the update that crashed your Zorin 9 install will have been a kernel update - if you know which update it was you could try reinstalling Zorin 9 but watch out for the updates that caused the issue - use Software Updater rather than the terminal as this will let you uncheck the updates that come through. ;) :D

tryed solydx does not boot up showes errors. zorin 9 i stated with, worked way better than windows until update. you said something about the grub i think.would that be from windows or linux. do i need bios up date, driver update on windows xp,then install zorin. or does zorin supply every thing it needs. seem to me it had ever thing until update and lost it. installed xp service pack 3 working ok but now it rejects every os i need anti-reject **** for my 2 dell pc. thinks for your help.what next

My Bad - I should have spotted the post on machine spec - 512 Mb is way too low in memory terms - even XP the advice was to get it running sweetly to have 1 Gb RAM - coupled with the fact you have a miniscule amount of memory allocated to graphics from the 512 Mb of RAM installed. Can you not buy more RAM and also purchase a separate Graphics Card? ;)

The first one I would donate to a charity/3rd world recycling? I did some searching for Graphics cards that are DAC and GNU/Linux and appears to be an issue that never got resolved. I will look into 2nd pc later when time allows. ;)

Hi, Just been looking around for distros that have a very lean resource requirement and this MIGHT fix both. Please be sure that you have deleted all partitions from your had drives and just create 1 FAT32 Partition that a fresh install of GNU/Linux can then overwrite with the correct file system.

Please take a look here:

Hi, block errors are codes for hardware issues, in this case a potentially failing hard drive. As a rule of thumb, most drives have a useable life of 3 years and for this I am talking about conventional Hard Drives not SSD's - even hard drives from the factory at new can have faults. My favourite drive used to be Samsung but they were bought out by Seagate after the Thailand Floods where they were produced. I no longer buy Seagate Drives because I bought one when I read that they had got the major market for PVR's (TV set top boxes) and had a 5-year warranty. The drive was barely 3 years old when it suffered armature failure. When I contacted the Warranty section I was advised I would have to send by mail at my expense and they would send out a 're-conditioned' drive, not a new one! I am currently using Western Digital Black and they are pretty quiet drives.

When you reboot the machine, can you please press the Left Shift key to view the Grub Menu, then press 'E' to edit the bootsplash command interface, press the spacebar, enter:

Code:
nomodeset acpi=off xforcevesa

and report back.

Thanks.

Back to square 1 - Do you see a black square with a blue-green border at start after post screen (Bootscreen of motherboard)?

1939d11

Sat May 06, 2017 12:56:49 pm

yes i see black screen with blue-green boarder for one sec, then menu shows up. with zorin 12, recovery,or windows xp . if i go to zorin 12 i have black screen. if i go to windows xp every thing good. if i go to recovery, and in menu choose reboot, zorin 12 home page will come up. but no internet. all so no repair has been made. reboot and black screen again.

then press return.

Do you mean to push E at the bottom of screen?

Swarfendor437
