Hello,
I am a complete and utter newbie to Linux-based machines - so take it easy on me.
We're in the process of virtualizing a good number of our user desktops and one of the things we wanted to see was whether we could get a windows-like linux VM up and running just to see what it would be like and if it's even a viable alternative. Also, we don't particularly like Microsoft's licensing so if we can stick it to them by not having to pay an arm and a leg for a VDI license for each VM that would be icing on the cake.
Here's my dilema and I don't even know if this is possible...
Running XenServer 6.0.2 as the Hypervisor. It's a Dell Server, Six Core Intel, 16GB Ram. Pretty standard box.
I downloaded Zorin 6 Core and created an iso for it. I can boot off the CD and I get the Zorin desktop. When I choose to install the operating system, it all seems to progress fine and prompts for a reboot. After rebooting I am prompted for a username and password (which was setup during intial installation) and then I get a whole bunch of cryptic (to me - the noob) stuff like the following...
/usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-updates-available: 49: /usr/lib/update-notifer/update-motd-updates-available: cannot create /var/lib/update-notifier/updates-available: Read-only file system...
There are a few other lines similar to the above also stating Read-only file system.
I've tried to create the VM both on shared storage - an NFS file share on our SAN and also on the local storage of the XenServer. Both installations behave the same - Read-only file system.
I'm guessing with my limited knowledge of Linux/Unix that this read-only file system is a bad thing. When these volumes (VM's) are being created Zorin is treating them as shared or network storage and flagging it as read only? Is there any way to create the VM on a XenServer hypervisor? Citrix does have quite a few machine templates including Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat 10.10. Currently I've tried to use just a generic "other" template with the above results.
I've tried installing directly from the media (cd) and also loading the desktop from the CD and choosing the Install option from the desktop. Nothing works - all come back with the same "Read-only file system".
We really wanted to see this work but if not - oh well it's not a deal breaker. This is one of those fun, challenging, frustrating things we get to do from time to time that make the job interesting. Any help/direction would be appreciated as I am VERY new to Linux/Ubuntu.
Thank you!
