Partitioning help

Just installed Zorin on a Vista desktop in dual boot mode and it went fine.
Tried installing on a Dell 8200 running XP, but could not find a way to shrink the XP partition down.
I did not get the "slider" option for dual boot, and could not manually shrink the XP partition to gain free disk space.
Do I have to use a partitioning tool prior to installing Zorin to obtain unused disk space?

Thanks very much. I used GParted on the XP machine to shrink the partition and create 20GB free space.
The Zorin install went off without a hitch and it dual boots just fine.
