Wireless Networking: Not Available

ProxyCyber

Mon Jan 21, 2013 7:21:55 am

About two months ago, I used Zorin 32bit and Wireless worked fine. Now I'm using Zorin OS 6.1, 64bit and it says that I have no Wireless Networks available. I enabled Additional Drivers: Broadcom Wireless, but no luck. I installed Wicd Network Manager from the software center, yet no luck. Any ideas on how to get it working?

When it says "no wireless networks available" it means that there are no wireless networks close to you so as to get connected. It does not mean that your wireless card is not working properly. (Unless you do know that there are many available wireless networks).

In that case, please post back (copy/paste) the results of the following commands:

lspci -nn
lsusb
sudo lshw -c network
sudo rfkill list all

It does not mean that. I have a router in my house, and about 36 connections as my Android even shows them. It worked before on the 32bit in the same house.

As swarf said, check if you have switched the wireless off either by a physical switch or via a key combination like FN+F2 etc.

Also try this in terminal
Code:
sudo rfkill unblock all

ProxyCyber

Mon Jan 21, 2013 4:26:59 pm

It's neither. I just booted Ubuntu, WiFi fast as ever. Go to default Zorin OS, no WiFi. I tried unblock all thing, it does nothing. F2 also does nothing and I don't have a switch.

When you are in ubuntu and the wifi is working, is the broadcom STA driver enabled? (from additional drivers) or not?

Hi,

Now when I officially tried Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04 my WiFi doesn't work at all... So I think this is an issue I need help with. I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 right now, and yes, Broadcom via Additional Drivers is "Green" and Enabled. But Ethernet icon says "Wireless Disabled by Hardware switch"... I use the Lenovo B560. All of a sudden, now no WiFi works on my computer regardless of operating system. Any help would be much appreciated.

"Disabled by hardware switch" means what it says.

Search the laptop for a wifi switch and turn it on. Also log into BIOS and see from there if there is any option for enabling wireless.
Also search for any key combinations Fn+F2 or similar (see on the "F" buttons if there is any image of a wireless antenna or similar).

Lastly please open terminal and do
Code:
sudo rfkill unblock all

and then post back here the results of
Code:
sudo rfkill list all

One more thing you can try is to go to additional drivers and DEsable the broadcom STA driver. If I remember well your wireless card (BCM4313) works better with the native kernel driver.
Have you fully updated your system?
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Did you try physically turning the hardware switch on and off? It may show a list of networks within 30 seconds, before switching off.

Thanks! But unfortunately, no luck with that either. i think I have to go to Windows, install proper drivers then switch to Linux again. I might go to Ultimate Edition. Have to do pre-test though before I switch.

Could you please try one thing?

Open terminal and write

reboot
and then again in terminal
Code:
sudo modprobe brcmsmac

You don't get any reply when executing this command.
Do again
Code:

and then
Code:
sudo rfkill list all

to see if the soft block has gone. Post back here the result if you like.

Now it says that you are "hard blocked". Which means that the wifi is switch off by a physical switch, key combination (i.e. Fn+F2) or by a BIOS setting.

I had said I did that already, that is not my issue. For me it's F5, but also did F2 -- nothing.

How can I edit this "BIO" settings?

madvinegar

Sat Jan 26, 2013 8:03:51 am

When you switch on the laptop press repeatedly F2 so as to get into the BIOS settings. Navigate through the optionsand check if there is any option for wireless, and if so, make sure it is set to "enabled". Search for similar wireless options and make sure that they are enabled.
Then press F10 to save and exit.
Be carefull which settings you alter.

True swarf. In anycase when the 1st screen opens, you can read which key is needed.

Hi, I went into F2 and Wireless was enabled. So I disabled and re-enabled to make sure and pressed F10 to save and exit. I still don't see a change. Well, now the Enable Wireless is light gray text, I can't click on it. Airplane mode is on in settings and says Wireless Unavailable.

Exactly that. Go to windows, make sure that your wireless is working on windows, reboot and then see if it works on zorin as well.
You may have to run
Code:
sudo rfkill unblock all

Ok guys now this is close. I updated Zorin and now NO MORE AIRPLANE, WIRELESS IS ON! But now it doesn't detect neteotkd where there ARE CONNECTECTIONS. So I go to settings "Wireless ON -- DISCONNECTED." How can I make it so it connects and detects?

If you click on network manager on the panel bar (the icon that shows two small PCs, or two arrows) don't you get a menu that expands and shows the available networks?

Nope. It says "Wireless Network Connected. Wireless: Disconnected." I can't seem to see the connections even though now Airplane mode is off, Wireless is enabled.

I waited beyond the required 5-6 seconds, but nothing. Is there a message supposed to come up after that line of code? Well Broadcom is enabled and it does have some Mac Address on it already. My Router is okay since my Android device is connected to it.

ProxyCyber

Mon Jan 28, 2013 5:57:40 pm

What exactly do you mean? I have a modem connected to the router of course, and an Ethernet to my laptop. No other things.

madvinegar

Tue Jan 29, 2013 7:03:53 am

The command I gave does not return any result. It just enables the wl (wifi) driver. So you give the command, wait 5-6 seconds and then you check in network manager to see if there are any available networks.
In the drop-down menu of the network manager, make sure that "enable networking" and "enable wireless" are checked.

Also, unplug the ethernet cable, reboot, and then try to connect via wireless.
