Hello Zorin Community,

First post, lurking and reading for a while now, I'm quite late coming to Linux, I started out with Win 2.11, and I wasn't young then. :o
I have been trying Linux Mint, but I wanted something a little different, so have tried various Live boots, Zorin looked good.

So here I am and ready to do a full install.. I have found, and been reading this:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2054

which almost immediately recommends following this:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2247

This where I seem to get stuck, and things seem to come to a stop for me
I understand what it's recommending, but it does-not seem to flow for me.. for example:

It starts with saying "Boot into Recovery", then some screen shots...
Then it tells you to boot into recovery mode.?? , but I thought I just had..?

"Press enter and your machine will begin the boot process. After a few moments, your workstation should display a menu with a number of options.
One of the options (you may need to scroll down to the bottom of the list) will be "Drop to root shell prompt"."

But then it's not clear what I should do next??

Sorry for maybe being a little slow....

Any clarification on the steps would be great...
I would like to try and not cause any self inflicted problems

Thanks... Dave

Hi Wirezfree, and welcome to Zorin. If you mean a 'full install' and absolutely nothing else, please check out my video here:

Hi Swarfendor437,

Wow, that was a quick reply...
Yes I want to do a full install on clean HD,
but I wanted to make sure I did it right, and do all the updates correctly at the start.
That is why I was looking at the thread I linked to.

I will take a look at your video.
Thanks again for the quick reply.

Dave

Glad to be of help friend - the only thing I did not get right on this was the resize at the end of the drive - this should match the same amount of RAM you have but no less than 4 Gb! :D

Hi,
Watching the video now...
One quick question... You did Primary, then extended for /home & /swap
If I only use this Laptop for Linux, and don't want any other partions.
Is there any benefit to using 3 primary.?, remember I'm new to this.?

Thanks... Dave

Hi Swarfendor437,

Video was good, looks straightforward,
When you boot after the install no interaction, you just let it do it's thing...

I noticed the login screen anomaly,
You needed to select "Swarfendor437" it wasn't selected by default

Sorry for double post.. My partition question.

Thanks... Dave

Not that I am aware of - the benefit of not using Primary is that you could potentially have 3 other Operating Systems on there but you would likely have to re-partition! ;)

Hi Dave - not a double-post really! That first flip-flop to user should only happen after first re-boot - after that your user name account should be highlighted every time! :D (Well that is my experience! Still running the RC as not had time to get down to installing Ultimate - Will be replacing XP with Win 7 Pro on another machine this weekend! :D

Hi Swarfendor437,

Thanks again,

I will try to do the Zorin install this weekend also.
I may take the donation route, I don't mind contributing, especially if I get stuck.

O.K, on XP > 7 , I'm still on XP Pro, I skipped Vista/Seven, tried 8... Not for me.
My old XP Pro box just purrs along, my event logs are a Sea of Blue :)

Will post back once I've done the install with my experinces

Thanks... Dave

Be advised you should really ditch XP - unless you intend to permanently disable any network connections and ensure anything you attach to it carries no malware or viruses! :D

Hate to admit it but I am getting quite used to Win8.1 now - and no classic shell / menu installed! :D

I know I should... But it's like a pair a well fitting shoes now.. So comfy.

Apparently I won a "Yahoo Award " today... I just needed to click the link... Yeah right
I think I will wait for them to send it to me,
I'm sure the courier will send me a nice email with a delivery confirmation "Click Here" email ;)

There is nothing wrong with XP, until people start using it. :)
