G'day all ..I'm a newby .. new with Zorin Forum ... new with Zorin .. fairly new in trying to get more involved with Ubuntu / Linux . I've D/L & burnt Zorin 8 .. had the live dvd running .. looks great ... easy to find things in general ...good job people .. thanks ! Now my problem ... I wrote the following after a few tries to install Zorin on an external drive... i will be forever grateful if this little problem can be solved ... here goes >

.

ZORIN INSTALL PROBLEM

HAVE ZORIN ON DVD ... RUN VIA BIOS CHANGE ON DESKTOP PC

IN THE INSTALL WIZARD >

At "Preparing to install Zorin " page shows >

drive space available ...ok & internet connection ... ok click "continue"

new page " unmount partitions that are in use "

shows > /dev/adc ...( my WD Essentials external hdd to be used for Zorin )

& > /dev/add ... ( my Seagate 2 tb external backup .. not to be removed )

I select " No " .. then " Installation Type " page appears ...

I select " Something Else "

window appears with selection of drives ...

/dev/sda 1 .... ( w7 loader )

/dev/sdb 1 ... ( clone of w7 above )

/dev/sdc ... ( newly formatted for Zorin install ..external )

/dev/sdd1 ... ( 2tb external backup )

at bottom left this page is " Device for boot loader installation "

I select /dev/sdc

then click " Install Now "

HOWEVER .... MESSAGE APPEARS >
--------------------------------------------------------------
" No rootfile system

No root file is defined

Please correct this from partioning menu "
-------------------------------------------------------------

so where do I go to correct this and what further steps do I need to continue the install ?

thanks .... end of story ... so if anyone can make any sense of my little drama I will greatly appreciated .. keep up the good work folks ...

HI, never tried installing to an external drive at all as I tend to use such devices for data backup only. Follow madvinegars guide here:

Be sure that you don't have any other external drives attached other than the one you want to install to.

An alternative might be this:
