[SOLVED] Before I give up on OS 8 Lite entirely...

I am one more XP convert who successfully loaded Zorin 6.2 Lite onto my X31 Thinkpad, and then upgraded it to 6.4, only to find out both were unsupported OSes. So I figured, okay, OS 8 Lite is now out. I'll go for that. Alas, the .iso download is too big for a CD which meant burning it to a DVD. Again, no problem except that my XT wouldn't t boot from the DVD... even though it's in the exact same drive as the CD was. I burned the thing 3 times at speeds down to 0.6x, just to make sure I wasn't screwing it up; then finally bit the bullet and bought a USB flash drive and used Unetbootin to make it bootable... which of course got me the "no pae" message. (Hey, at least it was progress. I never even got that far with the DVD)

From everything I've read, this is just an unsolvable problem with my old laptop. But since I was really only keeping it around for late night thoughts, is the lack of support for 6.4 an issue? I can stay off the Internet if that's the problem.

Hi

According my understanding you have a problem that Zorin 6.4 Lite is not supported any more and that means that you can not get any updates to that. That is why you want to go to Zorin 8 Lite, but that requires PAE support from the hardware. So you can not use that. I do not know whether there is a solution to get any supported Zorin os. to that hardware now. There should be some non PAE os. that you could install. Hopefully there is a solution to get a supported nonPAE from Zorin or to use some other Linux distro. Your question to use Zorin 6.4 Lite as non supported, not using Internet I did not understand why. What is the problem with Internet there?

Hi,

take a look here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE

For Lubuntu 14.04 LTS:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu-fake-PAE

If all else fails, use a different Lite version like Peppermint Linux or Bodhi (Need to be dedicated to use it but it is a nice system!).

And to add to Wolfman's list, LXLE (LTS derivative of Lubuntu) http://lxle.net

Thanks so much for all the advice and suggestions. I will definitely work my way through all these possibilities. I thought I had vaguely recalled someone else with the same problem discovering that all of the newer distros required PAE, but since this is not my main computer, I am certainly game for experimentation. And I am absolutely thrilled by and grateful for all this enthusiasm and support. Thanks again.

Well, the forcepae didn't work so I started ambling through the more elaborate command line project and was ecstatic when the cpuinfo command indicated I had successfully created the pae flag. The Zorin 8 Lite install, however, still reports it is missing (not sure why). The ensuing suggested instructions in your link for upgrading the kernel just didn't work, I guess because Zorin 6.4 is Lubuntu not Ubuntu. So tonight, I will try some of the other flavors. I will report back with, hopefully, some success.

Just one more to try - you'll never need to do another install again! :D

Victory! The Lubuntu 14.04 LTS loaded fine with the forcepae switch. I am not 100% thrilled with the interface. On the X31, the bottom end of the scroll bar disappears under the task bar. And despite messing with the .xml file in Openbox, I can not get programs to open maximized (though hey, that's what F11 is for) But I am thrilled my ancient but highly indestructible Thinkpad is now running a supported OS. Thanks so much to all of you.
