[SOLVED] Failed to start Live mode from USB

Fri May 23, 2014 11:20:13 am

My system:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66 GHz x2
G.Skill 4GB 1333MHz
ATI HD5770 1GB
Seagate 250GB 7200 RPM

zorin-os-8.1-core-32 on USB created with LiLi or Unetbootin same error
I choose Live mode at the boot screen and here are the errors I get and it does not continue the boot to Live Mode

(initramfs) calling: test-builtin
error reading /lib/udev/hwdb.bin: No such file or directory
load module index
unload module index

It does this 4 more times then says;

mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Invalid argument
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs

The same thing happens when using LiLi or Unetbootin to create the USB.
The USB is formatted to FAT32
I have never had this problem with any other Linux distribution.
Any thoughts on the solution for this problem ?

All of the files it can't find are on the USB as they should be.

Hi,

did you format the USB stick completely before using Unetbootin etc?:

Yes, it was freshly formatted to FAT32.
Just for grins I will see if the same problem occurs using the flash drive on my other machines.
This is the only distribution I have ever had this problem with.
I would sure like to take a look at Zorin.

I have checked the MD5 sum which validates fine. I tried the gamer version as well and it also had same error. I re-downloaded the 8.1 core 32bit checked its MD5 sum which validated as well. same problem.
Tried on two other machines, same error.
I have tried the safe graphics mode, same error.
Different USB flash drive, same error.
I will burn a DVD to see if there is success with that to go to Live Mode.

Interesting thread on BodhiLinux about lili here:

If you have any working LinuxOS, the best flash drive installer is MultiSystem - it is the only thing I ever use:

Swarfendor437 this was the error with both LiLi and Unetbootin.
I have used LiLi hundreds of times without this type error. I just installed the new Linux Mint 17 RC with it as well.
I was able use the Live version from burning a DVD, but when clients want Linux on their machines I use my USB flash drives for the installation.
I used a re-writeable DVD for this test because I don't buy blank DVD's anymore, just wasteful doing it that way.

I will give MultiSystem a go to see if it can fully boot to Live from USB flash drive.

I was able to create a USB flash drive that worked. I used the USB image writer that comes with the distro I'm using.
Zorin Live booted up fine.

Glad you are sorted friend - would still recommend you take a close look at MultiSystem though - it even has VirtualBox included! :D ;)
