(SOLVED) Zorin Ultimate on New HDD

Hi guys I have decided To keep Zorin OS (up to now I have been testing many things and was not sure if I would be going back to Windows) .. So now its time for me to take your good advice and Install Zorin Ultimate OS to a brand new 500GB WD Caviar Black - still in its box (there will only be Zorin OS on this machine and only one internal HDD), so please advise me on the best course of action .. remembering I do have my blonde moments

Hi Stephanie,

please bear in mind that it is better (IMO) to have 3 separate partitions (swap, root and home) instead of two!.

(I suspect that is why you where having trouble with little things like missing icons!)

Thank you Wolfman as this will be my main Computer I will be following your guide to the letter, I have a few days to go before I get a day off so I will have plenty of time to study your guide (next days off begin 14,02.2015), thank you

Edit: I think the best way for me (instead of me trying to remember the making of the three partitions is to login here and have your tutorial up on another Computer as I work on my main Computer, hopefully I should get it right)

Just to point out the logic behind using 3 partitions:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4848

All your data/settings are automatically saved on the /home partition when you re-install and DON'T MARK YOUR HOME PARTITION FOR FORMATTING!.

Whilst on the subject of the '/home' folder being kept intact for updates - another good reason for NOT ENCRYPTING your '/home' folder - Usually encryption makes a note of the system in use which creates its own algorithms - so an update might maintain your encrypted '/home' folder but you may not be able to access it - noticed that Open SuSE always warned against encrption!

The same applies to Windows too - I encrypted a folder for someone at work - the OS went head over apex and on fresh install - the encrypted folder/files could be seen but NOT accessed!

Doing this today (after ive had a bit of a sleep

) so looking at Wolfmans tut > viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2601(Part 3. Linux Returns) as Im using a brand new HDD i need to format it to NTFS correct ?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!, use Ext4 for root and home and swap will use its own format which I think is actually FAT32 but it does it automatically!.

It does explain that point in the partition guide! (somewhere).

Oh OK thanks Wolfman, I need to remove 3 drives and install the new one first, I will be using Gparted Ive burnt to disk

Here is a snapshot of my current layout and as you can see; I am dual booting with Windows and 3 versions of Linux!:

I assume you are only going to use Linux and no Windows so you only need 2 EXT4 (root and home) and 1 swap partitions.

OK done my 3 partitions swap is 8gb root 50gb home is rest of the drive so now i can just install ultimate ?

Edit: IT IS SAFE TO MARK BOTH ROOT AND HOME FOR FORMATTING AS YOU HAVE NOTHING ON THE PARTITIONS TO SAVE!.
