Hello fellow linux users! I'm really getting annoyed on finding a way to partition my hard drive for Zorin OS 5. Since I realized that I can only have 4 partitions on my hard drive, I would have to make an extended partition. Thing is, I don't know how!!! Is there any easy way of doing this? If not, is there an easier way for a linux noob like me to dual boot Zorin with Windows 7? Thank You!! :)

Your don't need to make a partition. The installation process of Zorin OS will give you an option to allocate space for partition

Yeah... Well that option dosen't help. When I resize my C drive, I can't do anything with the unallocated space.... :(

Plus, I don't know what to do when I resize the c drive.... :(

Could I just make a new simple volume and mount it into a folder in the C drive? Would that help?

Ok. I shrunk my C drive and did the Chk disk thing. Now I went to gparted and I got this message (on pic attachment). What did I do wrong? :(

Hmmmmmm I am not an expert at manually partitioning (as in, I've never come across what you have before!) but I know that all the primary partitions on your drive have been taken up by your manufacturer (HP) and windows 7 files. Unfortunately Windows 7 creates TWO primary partitions - the one with the SYSTEM label and the larger one (/dev/sda2) below it (which is where all your "stuff" goes). This problem didn't happen with XP and I too share your pain. Recovery and HP_TOOLS are both HP manufacturer partitions which are required to get your system going again if you decide to reinstall windows (if you delete them you CANNOT reinstall windows, as far as I'm aware - so tread carefully).

Anyway, you haven't done anything wrong from what I can see. Where you have highlighted 'unallocated, you will want to create logical partitions (or extended partitions, if that's what they're called). Right click on unallocated and go create partition or something similar (as I said earlier I'm not an expert and I haven't done this for a little while now). Up the top there will be a button for primary or logical. Click logical and set the label as / (for root). Make this about 10 gb (since we're only working on a 20 gb partition). There will be some more unallocated space after this - repeat the right click, create new, logical procedure but this time set the label to /home - make this 8 gb. Finally, do the procedure again for the remaining space and set the label to swap.

It SHOULD (and I repeat, SHOULD) work that way, but I strongly advise you wait for someone else to double check what I have written or do some more research of your own before you proceed - if you accidentally delete any of the other partitions or something else goes wrong (and I apologise for being dramatic but I feel the need to emphasise this) it won't be a fun process to restore it. I suggest you do a backup before doing any of this, if you haven't already.

P.S. If you are able to shrink your Windows 7 partition further you should (by about another 20 gb if you can) - you'll want more space for applications / files and such if you're going to be using Zorin regularly.

Yeah... but when I highlight the unallocated and right click to making a new partition, it wouldn't let me. Even when I went to the "install OS" application It says its unusable.... Here are some pics to what I'm talking about.

I have a laptop Hp G62-320US. I had a feeling I had to sacrifice something up on my computer. Too bad zorin can't be installed in the wubi procedure..... lol

Yeah. I looked online about which partition that people would most likely delete. This forum talks about that: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/Hp-Tools-Partion/td-p/228360. I was thinking of deleting my HP Recovery Partition after reading this. What do you think?

If you are sure you won't ever have to reinstall Windows again, then you can go ahead and delete it. As far as I am aware you will need it in case of a reinstall however.

Yeah. I just installed virtual box instead and I'm now installing Zorin virtually. Can you use a virtual hard disk in order to make a partition for Zorin?

Yeah. I decided to give up on deleting the HP Recovery Partition and just go with Virtual Box instead. Plus, I'm thinking of just going with Ubuntu or some other distro that's easier to install.... Thanks for the help though everyone!!!! :D

Shikamon - just wanted to let you know Zorin is based on Ubuntu! If you are having issues with Zorin there is a very good chance you will suffer the same thing with "stock" Ubuntu (or any linux distribution for that matter, seeing as how you have 4 primary partitions already). Unfortunately as far as I can tell no OS will install on any hard drive if all 4 primary partitions are taken. The options you have are virtualbox (which you have discovered! Good work on that by the way!) and....I just realised - you could overwrite the Windows partition if you didn't want to use Windows anymore - that would free up TWO primary partitions and still allow you to reinstall it if you needed to. However, I leave that up to you!

Best of luck with whatever you decide,

w2310b.

My best recommendation is to try turning-on the composite graphics (compiz, or whatever comes with Zorin). Here's why:
Neuveau is not much better than alpha quality so far & has no business being the default install from either Debian or Ubuntu. But unless you're a guru, removing Neuveau will break your system. Setting-up compiz is the easy way to maximize your graphics experience without having to deal with graphical driver headaches.

So far it has been installing zorin on windows 7. What about installing windows 7 on zorin? will the procedure be the same?

Once you have free space, create an extended partition, within that partition you can create 1 "/" (root) 20Gb's, 1 swap the same amount as your RAM, ie 4 Gb's if your RAM is 4, then a /home partition.

You can then when installing, select existing partitions or choose the partitions manually.

You can also simply create an extended partition and format it to ext4 and when installing, select use free space on the drive!!.

@Shikamon. Sorry, I don't get the question in first place. You can convert your primary partition into logical.

Install EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partiti ... 63346.html
Right click the partition you want to convert and select Convert to logical
They apply

I recommend you to backup your data first for safety reasons. Or for testing purpose, better way is to perform this operation in virtual environment i.e VirtualBox or VMWare Player.
