zorin9 upgrade path broken with java icedtea

Z9 system has broken after attempting to install upgraded
java-7-openjdk
icedtea
(and the java packages are not authenticated)

sudo apt-get install -f
and
sudo dpkg --configure -a
does not fix the broken system.

I have over 15 years of Linux installs & support and I'm stuck,
this install is on a computer at a holiday residence so I wont be able to attempt a fix after Jan 2

Update:

Was looking for 'applets' in synaptic and discovered this for iced tea:

just to recap the package management is stuck. There is no ability to recover unless broken packages are fixed and that is also broken.
