Launcher - No entries found

Hey guys,
i'm not a native speaker so i apologize for any spelling or grammar mistakes. :?

I downloaded Zorin OS 9 and installed it on my Lenovo U410 Laptop. Everything worked quite well and i even managed it to install and run Office 2010 but now i have a problem which i can't solve on my own and i wasn't able to find useful guides or other assistance.

When i click on the Z Orb the Launcher opens up and at the beginning everything was fine but now i don't see any Applications on the right side of the launcher (I'm using slicknesS and Slawomir). At the bottom of the launcher where you can insert a search query it says (roughly translated) "no entries found". Hitting the "Back"-Button or changing the setting in Gnomenu (e.g. from Slickness to Zorin OS Dark) doesn't affect this.

If you need further information please send me a detailed instruction so that i can provide this.

Thank you for your help!
Martin

Hi, and Welcome!

If you are referring to there not being MS Office icons showing this is due to the fact that it is running in 'wine' and does not readily show in the menu. It's been a while since I last did this as I don't tend to use MS Office on GNU/Linux anymore but there should be a way of creating some sort of shortcut on the desktop and creating a link to that - if not installed already, install 'alacarte' via Synaptic Package Manager (Menu | System Tools | Administration | Synaptic Package Manager). Note you will be asked for your login password when launching this as you need to be elevated to 'root' (administrator) to install software, just like that other OS. ;)

If you would like to upload a screenshot of your desktop (Use Menu | Accessories | Screenshot) and post as per this video tutorial:

Hi swarfendor437,

thank your for the quick response. It's a more general problem - I added a screenshot, which is from the unofficial Manual, because i'm currently not at home. It marked the relevant areas: all items in the yellow rectangle are missing (i see a blank area). The search bar at the bottom of the window is empty and it says "No entries for your search".

I hope this makes it more clearly.

Thank you
Martin

Have you completed a full update since installing? Also make sure that updates point to 'Main Server' in Software Updater, first tab after clicking on the 'Settings Button' after it has completed its whirligig thing! ;)

i have completed a software update after the installation of zorin. I check what you said and changed the path to "main-server". I updated my computer (8mb) and made a restart. The problem is the same :o

what do you think about a complete new installation of the desktop-environment?
When you think this can solve the problem...i'm gonna do it, because i really need this navigation area in my launcher (i'm a linux-noob :? )

Hi Martin,

Before going down the reinstall route some questions:

1. Where did you download from? http://sourceforge.net/projects/zorin-os/files/9/

2. Did you use any download accelerator managers? This will lead to a corrupt .iso

3. Did you check the md5sum of the downloaded .iso to ensure it matches what Zorin says it is? http://zorinos.com/download9.html
How to check in Windows - see my tutorial video on veoh.com - I have same user name. (http://winmd5.com)

4. If using Windows you only used 'imgburn' (available from https://ninite.com) at the slowest possible speed - if USB you formatted to FAT32

Hi Swarfendor437,

the answers to your questions:
ad 1) i downloaded it from http://zorinos.com/download9.html (Zorin OS 9 Core 64bit).
ad 2) i did not use any accelerators - just firefox and nothing else
ad 3) i did not check the md5sum. i deleted the iso.file from my windows pc after i created the bootable usb-stick.
ad 4) i formatted to fat32 before i used Unetbootin to create the bootable usb-stick

ähm i don't want to reinstall Zorin if it isn't absolutly neccessary. do you think a reinstallation of the desktop-environment can eliminate the problem?

Thank you for your help!

Update:

I reconstructed the downloaded .iso from the recycle bin! The md5sums did not match!

I will download the file from the link you send me and check again! I'm not happy because i hoped that i can avoid a complete new installation but it doesn't look very good at the moment.

Yesterday i downloaded Zorin, checked the md5sum and did a clean reinstallation... everything worked fine. The message "No entries for your search" is gone and i was able to install Office 2010 via PlayonLinux without any problems. I read the forum entry viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6180 and sticked close to this guide during the whole process.

I also updated the system and i was happy that no problems occured. I rebooted after the updates were finished but then i noticed other problems with the desktop.
After the restart the clock, the settings-button, wireless-connectionmanager and all the other stuff on the right side of the taskbar was gone.
I restarted the Laptop and they appeared as if nothing have happened.
Then i noticed another problem:
When i open the launcher the window is so big that there area were the shut-down button is gets covered by the taskbar. Thankfully is was able to shut-down the laptop via the settingsbutton on the right side.

The system runs stable but everytime i install zorin another part of the desktop starts to bug and every reboot "fixes" or causes another bug. A friend of mine experienced the same problem...

I hope you can help me once more! :?

Hi Martin89, I have been having the exact same issue with the 'indicator-3 applet' - and only the first time in Zorin 9 have I experienced this, not on any other iteration - 6, 7, 8. To be brutally frank I have never been a keen fan of indicator-3 applet, primarily because you cannot change it to a different colour or make it transparent. At one point I could get a 'notification area' to work which would show Opera Browser open, wireless etc and separate logout and power buttons. I have done this once more, but cannot get the notification area to work. See my posts here:

And check out appropriate videos here:

As for the Menu dipping behind the Panel, See Wolfman's Post install Guide - search for AWN/Avant Window Navigator.

Just started my laptop to check some mails....
It says:" Zorin 9 detected an internal error. if you notice more errors then you should restart the computer"

...maybe this screenshot gives you a clue what the problem could be. Hopefully i have time to read your last message during the weekend - sorry but i'm quite busy at the moment!

It very much looks like this issue:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/218434

Take a look here, especially last post but not sure if it would work under Zorin:
