Zorin 9 Ult. - Can't get past the login screen.

My Taskbar/Launcher has been randomly disappearing when I use my laptop, so I attempted to uninstall and reinstall AWN through terminal. Now I am stuck at the login screen. If I type in a wrong password, it works normally and tells me the password was incorrect. If I type in a correct password, then the OS makes as if to load up the desktop, but then refreshes and returns to the login screen. If I click Guest Account, and login using that, then the login screen again simply tries to load hte desktop, but only manages to cycle back to the login screen.

I could really use some help, seeing as how I can't get into my computer. Any time I try to log in, it just refreshes the login screen.
I would prefer to not have to wipe out and reinstall my operating system just to get it to work. I've tried repairing packages, and auto-removing packages that have been rendered unnecessary. There are, apparently, broken packages, but they refuse to be installed. It was suggested that I try "sudo apt-get update" or try it with "--fix-missing" but neither of those have worked successfully at all.

As a play by play, after selecting "repair broken packages" from the Recovery Mode GUI, it compares the package lists, and checks all the installed packages:

So, I hit "y" I do want to upgrade the packages what need fixing, and it says that most of them can't be authenticated, and asks if I want to continue:

At which point I am always informed that it is unable to update some of the archives:

Hi, I see that you have your updates pointing to a server in your country - these packages/upgrades may not be available on that server - try changing your settings to 'Main Server'. To do this go to:

Menu | System Tools | Administration | Software Updater - you will be asked for your login password. Wait for it to complete doing its thing then click on the 'Settings' Button. On the interface that opens, make sure that 'Check for latest release of Ubuntu' is set to 'Never'.

Next, click on the first tab and change your update server location given in that last screenshot and on the drop down menu button to the right of it click on it and change it to 'Main Server'. Then repeat your steps.

Keep us posted! :D

I couldn't change those settings because I couldn't get past the login screen I'm afraid. I was locked out of my operating system. The only thing I could do, was wipe out the operating system, and install it again. So, I installed Zorin OS 10 this time instead of 9. And now I'm merely struggling wtih, my wireless connections not working because I don't know what NIC the HP Probook 450 G2 actually has, so I have no way of getting drivers for it; and the fact that I decided to install Cairo-Dock, and slow transition from AWN to that, but my installing of Cairo-Dock and its pre-req's has caused AWN's launcher to stick around, but its menu bar is in the wind, and I have no way to determin what is and is not installed anymore, and this prevents me from physically selecting networks to join that my wifi detects as well.

So that's all for this thread. :)

Hi, press Ctrl+ Alt+ T to open a terminal and enter:

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net
lsmod

Post back the results here and wait for madvinegar to respond! ;) :D

[@madvinegar - if I got any of the above code wrong - sorry!]

One update is that I've finally located the AWN Launcher and the menu bar, and made them no longer be auto-hid. So they are technically working okay with my launching cairo-dock as well atm, though I have to launch that second one from terminal, because it doesn't start at boot-up. As for your requests:

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net:

It also bears mentioning that I had discovered an old ubuntu or zorin thread that may have provided hte proper code in order to install necessary nic drivers for my network interface card. I discoered this thread, which I failed to bookmark unfortunately, by googing my NIC after learning of a terminal command that would tell me what network card I had. It did install a driver, and it seems like my wifi seems to work usually on the wireless side, but not always, so maybe you might uncover a driver that I do not have, if I do not have the correct one after all.

OK, to find out what hardware you have in terms of network, enter this in terminal (Menu | Accessories | Terminal):

Code:
ifconfig -a

I found the command I used to get my current NIC driver I think. It was from this zorin thread:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8614

And the command was

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo modprobe -r wl
sudo modprobe wl

Which, apparently, was not a command to install a wireless nic driver. I guess I currently have no nic drivers installed atm.

Broadcom drivers are for wireless - I have the exact same NIC on my motherboard (except mine is 'rev 06' so not as new as yours) - it should just work once a wire is connected to your router. ;) :D

7vincent7black7

Fri Jan 29, 2016 2:22:16 pm

So I do have drivers? or should I still endeavour to get drivers to make sure wireless works? I pinged google.com yesterday and got 9% packet loss, which some TA in my Unix Lab class said was evidence of my wireless not working. Though, I just did that test again now, and it had 0% packet loss, so idk.

Do you see the network manager applet I told you about with the bars? If you can, right-click that and if you know the name of your router/access point at home it should show up as connected and show other wireless access points in your neighbourhood below, unconnected. ;) :D
