I need step by step instructions on installing programs. I understand using packages nut not programs for Linux.

Your easiest route if you prefer a GUI (Graphical User Interface) as opposed to Terminal commands, then your first port of call should be Zorin Software Centre/er in the Menu. Alternatively, launch Synaptic Package Manager and in the small search box near top and in the middle of the interface that opens - type the kind of thing you are looking for and it will return a plethora of different Programs/Applications for you to choose from - highlight them to view the details in the bottom pane. Hope this helps! ;) :D

What about programs that I find that are not in the software center?

Look for .deb packages and install using Software Centre/er or install 'Gdebi Package Installer' and use that:

Open Terminal (Menu | Accessories | Terminal - Zorin 9) and enter:

Code:
sudo apt-get install gdebi
