I guess because it is a thirdparty application - is there no way of exporting gimp images to a format that blender can recognise that way? Having downloaded the latest xcftools 1.07.1 it has an interesting element in the 'README' file stating it is unstable!:
"xcftools (1.0.7-1) unstable; urgency=high
* Recommendation of x11-common is switched to suggestion. Also xfree86-common
is droped since it's not in the archive any more.
