I would like to change a couple of things in the boot menu screen (font size and boot timeout)
Which file should I open and how do I get permission to change it ? - TIA

Hi retired, grub.cfg is your file. To edit and save, you must sudo gedit, then click File/Open and from Open Files Window, click File System/boot/grub/grub.cfg. I can not give you more advice , since I'm new with linux. Good Luck, maxmm5

I went into synaptic and downloaded the "startup manager" program. By editing the screen resolution to smaller dimensions you may be able to get a larger font. I also like the fact that you can choose your default boot configuration and you can set the amount of time the grub menu will display before initiating the boot sequence. This is a little more comfortable for me rather than editing those files manually as described in the aforementioned link provided by swarfendor. I hope this may be useful to someone :D
