[SOLVED] No Wi-Fi HP Pavilion x360

Sound is fixed, but I cannot connect to wifi. Network settings says it is out of range, but every other device can connect.

Did you try changing the router channel as per the video?

Yes, I switched from auto (channel 11) to channel 3. I tried so many times to fix this that I believe I am making it worse. The wireless information does not come up at all now on the task bar. Is there a internet reset button or a way to get it back to the start with the terminal?

Hi, right-click the Panel and select AWN Preferences, then click on 'applets' tab, then look to see if 'indicator-3' applet is showing in the 'dummy' panel at bottom of interface - either select and drag to main applet scroll window or select and use up arrow, then browse for indicator 3 applet and drag back down to the 'dummy' AWN panel in applets.

OK, with your computer hardwired to the router, can you firstly:

1. Go to Menu | System Tools | Administration | Soiftware Updater. After you have set it running (you will be asked for your login password to make you 'root' (administrator) wait for it to complete its search function and then click on 'Settings' - click on the first/left-most tab and ensure that your sources are set to 'Main Server' and refresh. Then close the Software Updater.

2. Open Synaptic Package Manager and in the small 'search filter' bar near top middle, enter 'ndiswrapper' - once you see the results of what is installed and what isn't, check mark the items for installing by selecting each one then right-click and select 'Mark for installation' then click on 'Apply'.

3. After you have completed this part, open a terminal (Menu | System Tools | Terminal) and enter:

4. Re-start your machine.

This concerns me too. I click on the boxes, it asks for my password and it does not stay clicked on

I guess this is because you already have these selected on the 2nd tab. If you compare the entries in the tabs there are the same entries in the second and third tab.

If I select an entry in the third, give the password, close and reload I get

Hi, If you are concerned about updates they don't have to be ticked as Zorin always updates security issues. The reason why Chrome does not update is because it is not in the OS but most likely because it will have been embedded in Ubuntu that Zorin is forked from - I covered how to get rid of Google in my updates and tweaks video.

And after a restart, it stopped working.

I then tried this:
cd rtlwifi_new
sudo make uninstall
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hanipouspilot/rtlwifi
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rtlwifi-new-dkms


Still not working.....

In the terminal, if I do this: sudo modprobe -rv rtl8723be
then this: sudo modprobe -v rtl8723be ant_sel=1

It works, but stops after I restart the laptop

I still have to type: sudo modprobe -v rtl8723be ant_sel=1 in the terminal after I restart my laptop.

Is there a way to save this - so that I don't have to enter the terminal every time?

So a friend saved a script for me to launch that command on start up. It works great. Thanks for your patience with me. I just gave up Windows as my operating system.

It may have. Since I am new to linux, the terminology is still somewhat foreign to me. I am just glad that it is working and I am excited to see zorin 12 soon.

It works great and I changed the startup script everything from the sudo modprobe -rv rtl8723be to the echo command. When I restart, I have to do everything again, including the make and sudo make install commands (nothing saved). What am I doing wrong?

I have always had an issue in Ubuntu with make and other commands. I hope madvinegar can come along and sort this for you?

delete the script.
I believe that there is a conflict between the last instructions you followed and the script you have prepared.

The echo command makes things permanent, without the need of the script.

I just tried that. It works until I reboot. The echo command doesn't save, even after I disabled the startup script.

After playing with settings, I found this: no scripts run on startup and I type sudo modprobe -v rtl8723be ant_sel=2 in terminal. Works great. If I have that same command on a startup script, it works but it will soon lose a good signal. I have my system to automatically login and I have to type in my password when I type the sudo command in the terminal (twice - once for the terminal and once for internet). It is a pain to type this in every time, but it is better than going through a whole list of commands every time I restart the system.

New update: I uninstalled the windows wireless drivers from the software center. I restarted and re-installed everything, including the echo command. I still needed the sudo modprobe -v rtl8723be ant_sel=2 in terminal. I changed the startup script to include that command and it now works great.

If someone is still having problems of this type ... follow below as I solved.

RTL8821AE wifi drivers in Ubuntu 16.04
First thing first, you need to identify which device is being used in your hardware, to find it, I opened a terminal and wrote the following:
lspci | grep Wireless
The system replies with the following line
03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8821AE 802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter
The model of the device (RTL8821AE) is very important, we will come back to this later.
For some reason, realtek adapters have had a history of disconnects and signal drops, but, lucky for us there is an answer.
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential git
git clone http://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git
cd rtlwifi_new
make
sudo make install
These commands build and install the drivers for
rtl8192ce, rtl8192se, rtl8192de, rtl8188ee, rtl8192ee, rtl8723ae, rtl8723be, and rtl8821ae, all in one go.
Just in case the system doesn’t load the appropriate kernel module, you can execute the following command from within your rtlwifi_new directory
sudo modprobe rtl8821ae
and reboot your system.
Congratulations your Ubuntu Linux kernel now has working Realtek wireless drivers.
