Hi! Yesterday after installing updates, I restarted the computer & had no Wi-Fi. When I switch over to Windows OS I do have Wi-Fi. Any clues?? Thanks

Hi what version of Zorin are you using? Is wifi integral to the machine or a dongle? ;) :D

I've no clue, our tech installed. How do I find the info you request?
Thx,

Open a terminal (Ctrl+ Alt+ T) and enter (you can copy and paste from here - that is what 'Select All' does - it copies to your clipboard):

Code:
sudo ifconfig -a

This will list all your network cards/chips - DON'T post your hexadecimal MAC (Media Access Control) addresses unless you want the machine to be hacked.

Fictitious example of a MAC address: 00:F6:A0:2E:5C:AB

Hi, looks like you have a Ralink chipset (Ra0):

Look at item 4 here:

http://www.tecmint.com/ifconfig-command-examples/

and replace 'eth0' with your 'Ra0' in a terminal (Ctrl+ Alt+ T).

Keep us posted! ;) :D

If this doesn't work, you did state the kernel had been updated - do you still have access to the 'Advanced' option in the GRUB menu? This should allow you to boot into Zorin using the earlier kernel before the updated was applied. ;) :D

Dear friend, yes I still have access to GRUB and so that is what we use. But this a.m. we got updates & so I did - but nothing changed..still going thru Advanced and to 13....whatever...96. I don't understand what this is all about & just wish I could go somewhere and 'Update' ..sad, isn't it? What throws me is I can go over to Windows 7 OS & no problem, but since I updated linux on the 13th or whenever it was, I have no linuxwifi...I dunno. I'm just a girl :~) I did go to tecmint but now I need to have more wine!!

so now I have done updates again but on zorin 13.00.96 because I have no wifi for for anything after that for 13.00.98 or 13.00.100. Don't know where to turn. Could it be my ralink dongle fried &I need to get a new one? What mystifies me is that I have wireless when I switch over to Windows 7... thanks for the help on a friday nite...or saturday....!

Hi, can you go to Advanced options in GRUB and choose the first kernel showing? The first Kernel will be the one at the bottom of the list, not the most recent so as far back as possible. If your RaLink works under Windows then it cannot be fried. RaLink are not the best dongle for GNU/Linux in fairness. ;) :D

GRUB yes & I've been using kernal 3.13.0-96 which does work. The most recent updates -98 & -100 do not. So that is all fine & good but does not solve the problem. Of course I can't go to -98 or -100 to get updates because of no wifi. So am hopeful when updates come up in -96 that the problem will be remedied but so far no luck...guess I'll continue updating when they come up & keep my fingers, toes etc crossed!!
Thanks for your time & patience,

You could try removing the newer kernels manually as given here:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/106031/h ... ing#106053

And see if that brings the wireless back to life - NO GUARANTEES! ;) :D

that scares me...removing stuff! I wonder if I can input the Network Connection info I can see on this update - what seems to be missing is the ethernet...?
