Hello, I have found that I cannot get into one of about 26 folders on my external usb2 hard drive. The error message reads as follows:
This location could not be displayed.

Sorry, could not display all the contents of "xxxx": Error when getting information for the file'/media/***/New Volume7/***/*** xx and *** ***.***: Input/output error

Was the particular folder created in Windows after you installed Zorin? Is Zorin the only OS on the system? How old is the external device? It could be a Caddy Controller problem or if you access the file before in Windows but Windows did not do a clean shut-down that can also cause issues. ;) :D

on system management. :( I still occasionally use the XP drive which is separate on a switchable tray - not a dual boot installation.
Just a few minutes ago, I ran the Windows XP installation:
I found the file that is causing all the trouble, using a Windows file manager.

A third party Office Word Processor in XP, could not open the problem file, but opened several others in the directory that Linux was locked out of.
I forced deletion of the damaged file using a third party unlocking/deletion program, and the file seemed to have been removed.

I then returned to the Zorin Installation, having switched off / disconnected the Windows drive.
:( There is no change, in that I can't open the folder containing the damaged file.

One light at the end of the tunnel relates to the fact that I can open other .ODT and TXT files in the otherwise locked folder, using Libre Office Writer, which should allow me to rescue the files not yet backed up (about three or 4 month's worth ... I know I've been slack!) , by saving from Writer to another location - a long and tedious process.

The damaged or corrupted file was not created recently, and was written under Zorin using Libre Office Writer, and has only just caused this problem. There might have been a power outage while the file was open ... this has happened occasionally, but Zorin and Libre Office usually deal well with any such event - perhaps that particular file was damaged - but why the delay before giving trouble and effectively shutting down the entire folder?

Hi, As we don't have the full (known) facts it is hard to progress this any further - if the drive has not been written to at all, can you try and recover using 'Test Disk'?

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

The IO error is a sign of Hardware failure, most likely HDD failure, I would suggest you back up what data you can to another drive.

I seem to recall there was something that could be used to ",ark" that location on the drive as bad and move what data it can elsewhere, I would have to do some research to provide any other details.
There are also data recovery/cloning tools available for completeing the backup if you so choose to do so.

Back again: I've rescued all files other than three PDF and the 1 ODT that originally triggered the error message. Libre Office was used to open each file, and save to another directory. Thanks for your time and tips re. Test Disk, which I have downloaded. I'm fairly certain now, that the entire hard Disc was formatted by Windows. I have decided to, at first opportunity, to acquire a new extrenal drive replacement, format it in a Linux Ext type of format, and backup all of the other as yet unaffected directories in all partitions, from the problem drive.
Cheers, thanks.

Thanks Linx, I think I was self denying the possibility of a HDD failure ... I will take steps to backup or rescue the entire drive ASAP to a new replacement. I appreciate your advice, thanks.

Hi, rather than mark this thread as [SOLVED] can we mark it as [CLOSED]? ;) :D

dingo

Wed Nov 09, 2016 3:30:12 am

Apologies for the delayed reply: I think "closed" would be safer than "solved", although my basic 'gut feeling' suggests solved - with thanks to all concerned at your end. I've taken the possibility of disc failure, seriously (as serious as I can get), and have disconnected the drive, pending a full transfer of contents to a very basic but new1 TB Barracuda .
