How do you create desktop shortcuts or place items on the quick launch bar?

Explore your /home folder, in the left pane, click on other locations - now browse the file system to 'usr | share | applications' - now just drag the apps icon you want on to the desktop. To get the apps icon on a panel, open the application from the menu then on the icon that appears on the panel, right-click and select 'add to favourites' which makes it a permanent launcher on the panel. ;) :D

Zorin choosing Gnome shell - its been an ongoing issue for Ubuntu users for years!
