[CLOSED] Power Management

The power management of Zorin 12/Ubuntu 16.04 seems to be all over the place - it certainly is not working on my expensive, Linux specific, Entroware Kratos 1000 laptop, and never has. The laptop was tested for compatibility with Zorin 11 by Entroware and everything worked flawlessly.

My laptop has continued to run on, lid closed, from day one - I have never seen a blinking green, only the solid green of the "Computer is on" along with a blue illuminated Power Button, normally only on at Power up. On reopening the lid, I have to hard power off on the power button and do a full restart or, if the battery has been run down - as it has many times - apply mains power and then do a full restart. This can not be good for my hard drive!

According to Zorin Ultimate support Zorin 12 goes into sleep mode on lid closed by default. Looking in Gnome Tweak tool, sleep is not even an option - How can I get back to this default (it was set to suspend in Gnome Tweak tool) when it is not available? Setting the lid closed default to Hibernate in Gnome Tweak tool, as suggested by Zorin 12 Ultimate support, has made no difference.

Some say you must close KDE to prevent it consuming power. Some (Zorin 12 Ultimate support) suggest that NVIDIA drivers (which I am not using - having selected to run on Intel's graphics driver) may be somehow selected to run continuously.

Additionally, the lock-screen feature came on even when it was selected "off" in Settings (Automatic suspend controls this, I think). Removing the annoying lock-screen, which used to appear after restarting a session that had gone to lock-screen with the lid open, using gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver ubuntu-lock-on-suspend false seemed to eliminate the lock-screen, but locked the computer instead - I have to hard power off on the power button and do a full restart - at least it used to resume the session after I put my password into the lock-screen prompt.

Is KDE used by Zorin12 for power management, as some suggest online. If not - what is used?
I notice that the Power Management section of KDE Configuration Tool has to be manually selected on after opening the KDE Configuration Tool - should it be running? - how can I ensure this runs automatically? Is this something to do with my problem? Is there a reset to defaults anywhere for power settings? Any other suggestions?

Second to not being able to print using my Windows "zero password" network, networked printer, this is my biggest hang up with Zorin 12 Ultimate - I had neither of these issues with Zorin 9. I hope that I can get these issue resolved. Thanks in anticipation for any help.

P.S. The Gnome guide says:

1 Click Computer > Shutdown.

2 Select one of the following options:

Shutdown
Logs you out of the current session, then turns off the computer.

Restart
Logs you out of the current session, then restarts the computer.

Suspend
Puts your computer in a temporary state that conserves power. The state of your session is preserved, however, including all applications you have running and all documents you have open.

Hibernate
Suspends your session, using no power until the computer is restarted. The state of your session is preserved, however, including all applications you have running and all documents you have open.

How can I get Click Computer > Shutdown in Zorin 12 - it sounds just what I want?

Somebody posted (Sacha) that it works with 16.04 too! :D

I write as an absolute amateur, but have an 11" notebook I have carried when travelling. In between, I have used it to try various operating systems, and keep the size of files on it small enough to carry on a small USB drive. I have often found that closing the top did not put the machine to sleep. The easiest way is to shut down and then restart when you need to. The Gnome guide of 4 options don't come up in Zorin 12 - only 'Restart' and 'Power off', so I just Power off.
If you leave the top open, the system will go to sleep automatically in about 5 minutes ( I think this time is adjustable, but not sure).
If you disable the 'sign-in' on start-up, it makes no difference - you will still have to sign in again when you wake it up (I wake the mouse/pad up with a gentle thump). I hope this helps you.

Alleluia! - the final straw of my Zorin 12 Ultimate install came when some dude broke into Slimjet, my browser, offering to make me a millionaire (uncommanded by me and something that Linux was supposed to protect me from) - I decided to ditch the build and throw away all the hours spent carefully making the changes that you have helped me with.

I was on the point of reverting everything back to Zorin 9, as set up on my older Toshiba laptop, by using my Zorin 9 install DVD and then using backup to install my settings (Would this have worked, I still wonder?).

On impulse, I tried my third install of Zorin 12 Ultimate - using a DVD prepared on my Toshiba laptop (the first install, by DVD, had failed on install and the second, via USB stick, was the one I have had trouble with).

Hey Presto! After install and restart, my new Entroware, Kratos 1000 laptop suspended on lid close - just like it always should have done, flashing light and all! I have still got to resolve my issue with my networked printer and will follow this up in the thread I raised to resolve my printer issues.

So, thanks for all the help and suggestions that have been made to help me and I take back all my comments about Zorin 12 Ultimate power management.

I still have to work carefully through setting the Kratos up to suit my needs, but I did want to use the latest Linux kernel and Zorin 12 and that is what I am doing. Please mark this thread closed.
