Screen Sharing not working on Zorin 12 Core?

Hi all:

I must be an idiot, but upon turning on screen sharing in the Settings->Sharing section, I still can't VNC to the box. It has an IP, has no firewall enabled, and I can ssh to it so I know it has net connectivity.

I'm connecting via vnc:// on a Mac if it makes a difference.

Anything I'm missing?

Thanks a lot for the reply. I had seen this but I don't even get that far! netstat doesn't even show anything listening on 5900, 5901, etc. Do I need to install anything? This should be so simple!

Hi, I posted a video on Vimeo of SolydX (https://vimeo.com/198422833) which comes with a preconfigured firewall, rules an all, for accessing other machines - add those rules to gufw in Zorin and it just might resolve the issue?

To get to the information its nineteen minutes and 57 seconds in.

The firewall is off, so no amount of rules will change anything ;-)

There is no service listening on the VNC ports, so I can see why it's not connecting. I'm more wondering why it's not starting up the service upon configuring it in the Settings. I tried the same thing on ubuntu and it works just fine.

All I can suggest is this:

My only other thought is whilst it is not running by default, I am wondering if Zorin reserves ports for the bundled Reminds Remote Desktop.

Just found this:

https://www.linode.com/docs/application ... untu-16-04

Try installing everything but NOT ubuntu-desktop. Before I uninstalled Zorin 12 I installed Gnome - the full package - as Zorin only uses part of Gnome, not everything - when you do you will get a ton more of stuff such as the overheavy Evolution mail client being installed.

I am guessing at this point as RDP is nothing I have ever used before apart from Team Viewer. ;) :D

Thanks for your responses and trying to help. At this point I will give up on Zorin and use another distro. If something as simple as enabling screen sharing is not working, I will not put any more effort into this when other distros work out of the box. A shame, really.

Have you tried using remains instead of vnc?

Sorry to see you going. Please bear in mind that Zorin is primarily aimed at non-technical Windows users, the average Desktop user is not likely to be using Ssh commands etc. ;) :D

There's a ton of different things that could be used. They are all workarounds for a feature that is supposed to be built in and that doesn't work "as advertised".

Are you referring to Remains or Zorin? Remain a came out as the top rep app in Linux Format magazine a few months back. Before going please PM your concerns to AZorin and Zorin.

I'm sure Remains is very nice, so is Team Viewer and a lot of other solutions. What I meant is that if there is a setting in Zorin to enable Screen Sharing, and that setting does nothing, it's either a bug or a missing feature and that option should be removed completely.

Hi, I'll need to play with rdp at some point to see what's what - I don't own a mac so that could be a stumbling block! ;) :D
