[SOLVED] blank screen if I close laptop lid

Total Linux noob here

Generally try a google search and I searched here but didn't get anything matching my issue (could have been my search string...)

If I just shut the laptop lid closed (as I would do in Windows/OSX) when I re-open the lid it will just have a blank screen. Have to hold power button to re-boot.
So I thought that if I locked the screen then closed the lid it would be different but same thing happens.
If I just lock the computer without closing the lid it will wake up fine and request password.

As far as I can see I only have the power button which gives me shut down and restart options, the lock button and then the log off button.
Most search results return suspend and hibernate issues but not sure where to go from here.

Thanks in advance

Dual Boot with Windows 7

Thanks.

Reading that it seems like I have to change xorg.conf in relation to the ATI quirks but there isn't one and every way i googled to create one ends up with a fatal error/freezes the entire laptop. :(

Forgot to add I'm running Zorin 12 Core

I ended up just following this page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver and it works now!
