Update stopped during upgrade

During the upgrade, I clicked on the details button. The downloading of the update had almost completed. But when I clicked the details button, and the dialog window went away.
Later I had to turn off the computer, and when I booted, all the icons in the system menu area are missing. Such as network, sound, ect...

I would appreciate any help...

Hi,

start your PC and select recovery mode, then select "dpkg" then run it saying "y" where necessary and restart your PC with ctrl+alt+del.

"dpkg" is there to sort out any damaged packages!!.
