Hello,

I wanna to ask the order about their experience with playing 1080p/720p *.mkv movies.

I have an laptop with Radeon HD4200 connected via HDMI to Reciever + 5.0 Repro Setup, Zorin OS 5.2 fresh install + updates

On windows ive been using Media Player Classic - MPC which is great which functions and UI, havent found anything suitable on Linux yet

Banshee player - no option to change sound to 5.1 via AC3 SPDIF - so useless

Gnome Mplayer - Good i can setup AC3 but i have problems that after 10-15min playing a movie i get just randomly screen freeze, but sound is still going on. Ive tried to change X11,XC which are adviced to use, even others but on those movie is not playing at all. Sound it fine comparing to VLC

SMPlayer - Seem the most user friendly, but soon as i set AC3/SPDIF it just crash as i want to play mkv, which sux

VLC - also fine but it doesnt remember the settings as i set up the view options for ex. 16:9 pics, Deinterlace - 6, basically all the settings which i set are not being saved. Havent found any option, so when i play something later i need to set up all over again. Also one big issue is that sound is randomly stopping for few milliseconds each 5-10mins or so... Its pretty annoying when you are watching movie. Picture it self is fine no freezes like in Gnome Mplayer.

So my questions are:

1. Am i missing some codecs or something?
2. Do i setup things wrong way?
3. Any other good player to try?

hi,

firstly, install the "Medibuntu" repo if you haven't already done so:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Then install w32 or w64 codecs depending whether you have a 64 or 32 Bit system, you can try "xbmc" which is a multimedia player:

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-instal ... g-ppa.html

The packages "nonfree-codecs", "libxine1-plugins", libxine1-all-plugins".

Hope this helps. :D

Hi,

if you install XBMC you will find that it auto boots to that prog, click on the button and select "exit" which will take you to the login screen, down at the bottom taskbar on the right, select "Gnome Classic" then log in, once logged in, go to the control center and "login screen" and make sure that it is set to "Gnome Classic". You must unlock to enter the settings for login screen in the control center!!.

hmm i dont like to boot to other system just when i wanna play some movie , but ive tried and the mouse speed in XBMC is just insane very fast, no option to change it.

Also i guess it does work on Wifi internet, so im not able to download addons , even i click on any of them to INSTALL nothing is going on. In setting for network no option for that either even i cant see in im online or not.

Any idea about those things? Thanks
