Icons mismatch

calquebg

Fri Mar 31, 2017 6:39:08 pm

Hello!

Ever since one of the latest updates my icons changed size and I am unable to convert them back to normal. Its pretty chaotic as most are huge in size others are smaller. I cant seem to find any way to fix this as I am pretty inexperienced with Linux and terminal commands in general. The one thing I tried is right clicking on them and using the resize option, but it doesn’t comply, it just moves them a little bit. Is there any way to set a standard size for all icons?

Hi, if not already installed, please install 'dconf-editor' - make sure your updates in Software Updates are pointing to Main Server instead of your country's server. Open a Terminal (Menu | Utilities | Terminal or Ctrl+ Alt+ T) and enter:

Code:
sudo apt install dconf-tools
- this will install a menu item under System Tools, 'dConf Editor' - see my post here on icon sizes:

Well it sort of worked. However when it changes the icon size it still keeps them imbalanced in size, regardless if it's set to smallest > largest.

ps dont know how to set updates pointing to Main Server

Fri Mar 31, 2017 10:58:12 pm

ps Never mind I've set it pointing to the main server but only after everything was said and done and yes it was set up to get updates to my county's server instead.

Btw Id like to point out that I've been having a few other issues since the update as well. I was used to using the windows 7 look, but after that update the bottom panel no longer acknowledged when I started a program. The time, volume and language settings on the right side of the bottom panel worked fine and the menu's on the left side as well. But shut down and restart stopped working after the update. So I was kinda forced to switch to Gnome 2. It works, however sometimes when Im using Firefox or Chromium, it will minimize and never maximise that program again. The only solution I've found is to close the application and start again.

Have you run a full update after installation?:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9785

Does 'Software' link work or are you having issues with that?

Can you also provide us with more information on your setup?

yes I am up to date and always update. Not sure what is a full update. But before I ran that problematic update it asked me something like are you sure you want to update this will make changes etc etc.

[Does 'Software' link work or are you having issues with that?] Is there a link in the text? I get nothing.
I tried to download sudo apt-get install awn-applets-all from the topic you linked and it said awn-applets-all cannot be found.

Sorry, I should have pointed out that awn-applets bit should have been ignored - it was an attempt to get the look of earlier versions of Zorin - it won't work because Zorin 12.x runs on Gnome Shell and AWN is a dead project so it is never going to be compatible with newer kernels as they get released. Will do some delving to see if I can get any further. ;) :D

Hi, As Zorin uses Gnome Shell I did my searching using Gnome Shell as the criteria for the issue. Take a look here:

let us know if it helps - please be sure to read the thread in its entirety. Thanks. ;) :D

I dont understand any of this. What am I supposed to do? How do I get to this gnome-shell.css?

Swarfendor437

Sat Apr 01, 2017 2:06:35 pm

OK, Open your Home folder then in left pane, click on '+ Other locations' then click on 'Computer' then open 'usr' folder, then 'share' folder, then 'gnome-shell' folder, then 'theme' folder. First before editing, rename 'gnome-classic.css' to 'gnome-classicold.css' - open the file, edit the appropriate lines and save as 'gnome-classic.css' just in case of any issues.

Thanks for the help but as soon as I get to the gnome-shell folder there is no theme folder  Theres only one folder inside search-providers with a couple of ini files inside. Is this unusual?

Hi, I am wondering if you have corrupted your install with a direct Ubuntu update instead of Zorin as your min/max/close buttons have the 'orange' theme normally associated with Ubuntu - I think you need to do a fresh install and make sure that check for latest updates is not checked:

Updates.jpg

calquebg

Sun Apr 02, 2017 9:28:33 am

Yes. I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday. That one of the updates was for Ubuntu and it has corrupted the OS. But it's not a latest update. It was a few months ago. And it was a major update since I remembered it asking me are you sure, this will make changes etc... And after the restart the entire OS looked differently. So a clean reinstall would be the best choice. But I have a few questions. Will I be able to keep my data? And most importantly how can I prevent this from happening again? Ignore updates that mention Ubuntu? Also I have the original Zorin OS 9 Core 64 bit burned to dvd, should I bother burning the newer version or I can update it?

Hi, If you did not make a manual partition for /home you will need to backup your critical data to a USB flash drive or external hard drive - I don't know how much data you have. When backing up your /home folder be sure that you can see all of the hidden files which start with a period e.g., '.wine'. I would think you are better sticking with Zorin 12 than going back to Zorin 9.

calquebg

Sun Apr 02, 2017 2:31:03 pm

Alright then. But the last thing is how can I make sure I dont get the wrong update again? By unchecking Important security updates, Recommended updates, Unsupported updates is that all? The software center prompts out updates automatically, which should I not accept? How do I identify them?

Swarfendor437

Sun Apr 02, 2017 9:08:46 pm

Just leave your settings as they are but change update settings to Main Server - leave everything else untouched - Zorin will push out the bits you need. ;) :D

calquebg

Sun Apr 02, 2017 11:35:07 pm

ok! I'll leave the Important security updates, Recommended updates, Unsupported updates checked then. (I unchecked them just in case) Im running Zorin OS 12 now, I think the issue has been resolved. I didn't even need a usb or other external drive I moved the files around my 2 hdd's and it offered me the option to reinstall the Ubuntu without tampering with the Windows. Linux gives me the option to move files around my 2 hard drives, even if one isn't using a Linux OS, too bad Windows doesn't. Anyway I have a final question, that's been kinda bothering me from the start. Since I have Zorin on my older HDD and Windows 7 on my SSHD do I actually get the speed benefit from the hybrid drive when Im running Linux? Logic implies yes, but Im not sure.

Either way thanks allot for the assistance! You've been of great help and sorry If I annoyed you with too many questions. cheers!

No problem friend! Glad to be of help. Now someone came on here with a dual-boot issue and I gave them the answer - Windows on SSD, GNU/Linux on HDD - if only single OS then yes, by all means put on SSD - I'm of the old school and never ventured into SSD's as a few years ago you had to TRIM drives before putting GNU/Linux on and there is the new fangled GPT partitioning - so leave me out of new hardware! I would probably screw it up and I'd rather have a working HDD than a bricked SSD!
