I created a Live USB, and I can boot from it, but it won't go to a proper display. It shows the message that the resolution is not supported and that I must change the resolution on the device. I hesitate to risk trying to install onto the HD given this issue...because I don't want to wipe the Windows installation until I'm ready to go with this. How can I get going? Thank you.

Maybe you can you edit the boot configuration by pressing the <E>, when in menu when the computer boots.
If you add
- Code:
nomodeset
to the kernel line, your system should boot with kernel not loading video drivers and boot with bios modes instead.
