Latest issue - alternate printer

We have just bought a replacement printer a Canon Pixma TS5050 - a WiFi model, so no need to connect to a network.

In preparation, I downloaded and installed the printer driver for this model (it was already installed).

Printer on and ready for it's first PC WiFi connection, I ran sudo system-config-printer.

Hey presto - there was a new printer showing labelled PDF, which I had not seen before, Model generic CUPS-PDF printer, IP address localhost.

Great - I will try a test page! Disappointment - not a peep or print.

What did I do wrong - is it to be found in network printers?; what about that print driver - it hasn't been mentioned yet? troubleshoot text would follow - but it would not upload.

A pdf printer is the same as in windows; it creates a pdf.

Thanks, Swarf.

So, if I printed to pdf it would save a .pdf to the place on my choice? If so, nice feature, but I never noticed it before.

However the real breakthrough came from

https://appuals.com/how-to-install-wire ... ntu-16-04/

and, significantly, blindly going through the Canon printer menu (no guide or installation manual supplied) and finding a place where I could connect to my router and enter its password.

Then Settings>printer found it immediately and the rest is history! Just got to do the same for my wife's I-pad.

P.S. Now that I have the printer working and the scanning app installed (scangearmp2-3.40-1-deb), how do I conduct a scan? I have both Simple Scan and Xsane Image scanning installed - but I have never run them.

It looks like “scangearmp2” in the terminal might do it, but I would like a GUI, if possible.

Scanning: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9554

If the scanner part is supported with the canon scangear then a paid for version for full program is available from http://www.hamrick.com/ (Vuescan). The demo version will work fine but you won't get OCR. Scangear won't do OCR. Been unable to get 'Simon' working for OCR work. ;) :D

I've downloaded Vuescan and will investigate it in due course.

From what my Son-in-law tells me, the Canon print app on the i-pad gives excellent scanning and OCR facilities, so no real issue here.
