[SOLVED] Second display does not appear in display settings.

Hi,

I am trying to connect my laptop to my TV via HDMI, however my TV does appear under 'Screen Display' in the display settings. The TV functions as a second display in both Windows (on the same laptop) and on a MacBook but I cannot work out how to make it appear in ZorinOS 12.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Having read about similar issues here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... untu-14-04 one possible solution is to ensure that the HDMI is attached to the Notebook before booting.

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately attaching the HDMI cable prior to booting the laptop didn't seem to make any difference. I still only get the laptop's display showing up under 'Screen Display'.

I use Zorin OS 12.2 ultimate

- connect TV and laptop with HDMI
- lite TV and fiddle with your remote controle to assure that you have the correct HDMI channel shown on TV
- lite on the laptop. I used WIFI for testing.
- the desktop picture was shown automatically on the TV but... no possibility to show menu/internet browser or do anything
- go to DISPLAY in your laptop/menu/settings to see if the TV was recognized correctly (mine is not a recent flatscreen and at least 7 years old )
- you see a case to tick off for 'mirror displays' and yes you can use the TV screen for Zorin

I would be tempted to find out the native display format of your TV and the alternate input formats that it can work with - this should be in the back of the operating instructions. I would work with the native display format (as I guess the TV works best with this).

You then would need to ensure that your Zorin system is set to be able to drive that format on both your PC display and your TV - mirroring uses the same picture format for both screens driven.

I've fixed the problem. The laptop was set to only use integrated graphics in the BIOS - switching to the dedicated NVIDIA GPU made it possible to drive more than one display. I still needed to play around with drivers to find something that would work without crashing the system or resulting in a black screen. Everything seems to be working okay for now, though I can't work out how to change the overscan in Zorin.
