radio boogie

I have this *$##& Acer Aspire E11 netbook that "m ready to use for sighting in my rifle.
I got it from my stepdaughter, original config of Win7 Home Premium, but she forgot the password. BIOS had a password it took me a week to get out of the way. No internal DVD drive, and I fought with every type of media to reinstall Windoze 7 to no avail. So, I tried a Zorin 12.1 core DVD I had burned a while back, and it installed and ran well for about four days.
Today, it started locking up on Chromium frequently. It's a fanless system, and I know it's clean inside because I had to disassemble it to attempt to clear the BIOS password. I can rule dust out. Also, it seems just slightly warm to the tough, top and bottom.
My intention for this computer is web browsing and a media device for our upcoming "cord cutting" since it has an HDMI port. I installed a few apps yesterday, Kodi being one. Not sure if this is a factor or not.
I saw an update for the OS and installed it, and now, it's stuck in a logon loop.I log in, it tries to load up the desktop, with one icon for "Network Servers" and flips right back to the login. Any suggestions? Should I try to tinker with this (I'm *really* pressed for time!) or just download and burn the 12.3 ISO and install it? Or, is there maybe a better distro for what I want to do (Roku type media device)? I'm in the middle of building a new radio studio, which is WAY behind schedule, my bench is piled high with gear I need to tune up or repair and I wish I had an assistant, so the quickest solution is best here! This thing has been the bane of my existence since LAST FALL.
