Can't install Zorin 12.3 Ultimate Plz help!

Hi i have just purchased the Zorin OS 12.3 Ultimate because i was interested in using Linux and i thought that Zoris OS looked awesome.

i am using an USB which is formatted with FAT32 and has the installation files transfered by Rufus... Now my call for help is simply that i cannot get any further into the boot section than
where the OS is trying to load all or some of the files... the furthest i have gotten is when i press F6 i can see the commands it is completing, and the last command it ever completes is it has started something with the user login or something, but then my pc turns off all of it's activity (i mean it simply just hangs at the same screen) but also i get some firmware bug, which i don't know is supposed to occur or if it has something to do with my pc?

My PC's specs are:

Intel 6800K 6 Core CPU running @ 3.40Ghz
Asus x99 ROG Strix Motherboard
32GB ddr4 ram
NVidia Geforce GTX 1070 by Asus
Windows 10 Pro
My screen can show up to 2560x1440 @ 144Hz
My BIOS is up-to-date also.

I don't know if there is something there that isn't compatible with Zorin OS but i sure hope that it is fine.

Thanks in advance,
Standtall007.

Are you attempting to dual-boot with Windows?

Yes, but the problem i had yesterday which is written above is solely because i tried to install Zorin 12.3 using UEFI version...

Now i cannot even install the legacy version, though i could finally get to the boot menu where i can press F6 to disable nomodeset, but the thing is it stops loading as soon as i try to either install or try it without installing... it gives me an error twice which says something like "ddc responded but no edid for dp-1" i have tried doing what people have mentioned online about using enhanced ide instead, but i don't have that in my bios, i can only choose IDE or AHCI, and i have tried to switch to IDE but it doesn't help me at all.

Hello, take a look at this from https://zorinos.com/help/

"Zorin Support - If you have purchased the Ultimate or Business edition of Zorin OS, you can get support directly from the team" . https://zorinos.com/help/zorin-premium-support/

I am not and advanced user but I have seen this and maybe it can help you too.

Hi, do you have more than one monitor attached?:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=881772

Also check this out - you need enhanced setting in BIOS:

Yes i have tried to look at that last link yesterday, and i cannot change my settings for HDD to Enhanced IDE, i only have two choices: IDE and AHCI, that's it.
And no i only got one monitor, and i haven't even tried with two monitors :)

I should also mention that i have tried to set the SATA settings to IDE but i still cannot install Zorin OS, meaning it is a useless feature i can turn off / on.

Just a thought - when I loaded Zorin 12 it was onto a machine with both UEFI AND safe start disabled - I know you are using the UEFI version of Zorin 12, but what about safe start?

Also, I found the dvd version of Zorin 12 much better at installing than off a usb - which did not even work.

Hi i have turned off secure boot if that's what you mean, and i am not using UEFI since i cannot even get into the boot menu when doing so, so i have to use legacy installation.
Also i have tried and burned the iso image to a blu ray since i don't have any dvd's available currently, but that doesn't work either, i am really getting lost here with what i can try next.

Do you have any of the following options in your BIOS?

"Main

Storage Configuration

SATA Configuration [Enhanced]

Configure SATA as [IDE]

Hard Disk Write Protect [Disabled]

IDE Detect Time Out (Sec) [35]

to,

Main

Storage Configuration

Configure [AHCI]

Hard Disk Write Protect [Disabled]

IDE Detect Time Out (Sec) [35]

AHCI Configuration

AHCI CD/DVD Boot Time out [35]

SATA Port1 [Hard Disk]

SATA Port2 [ATAPI CD-ROM]

SATA Port3 [Not Detected]

SATA Port34 [Not Detected]"

[extracted from: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Fo ... =itproxpsp]

Whilst on the topic of the BIOS, have you ever updated it? ;) :D

This is what i have in PCH Storage Configuration in my Advanced Settings in the BIOS:

I have Hyper Kit Mode which has Disabled and Enabled as choices,
SATAEXPRESS_1 SRIS Support (in this field i can select Auto and Disabled)
S.M.A.R.T. Status Check (this is a two button selector: On or Off)
SATA Controller 1 Mode Selection (in this i can select : Disabled, IDE, AHCI and RAID) there is also a SATA Controller 2 Mode Selection which has the exact same choices!
Support Aggresive Link Power Management (again : Disabled or Enabled)

Oh, one last thing: i have already updated my BIOS to the latest version for my motherboard :)

Can you run the blueray version of Zorin12 as a live install (I don't know that a blueray disc will work, but for me a DVD was best).

OR

Buy a blank DVD, burn the .iso and see if you can run that live. If the DVD works try an install.

Unfortunately i cannot run the bluray as a live install, i can only get to the boot menu and as soon as it tries to access (possibly the cdrom drive in this case) the drive, then it gives me an error i have mentioned previously, and it doesn't get any further than that! I hope it isn't because my Windows 10's C:\ drive is actually an NVME M.2 drive... i have also found out that the error i get is not likely due to my GPU but rather my HDD's.

Hello again, i have tried to follow the links you provided and i am now wondering since i have read somewhere that Zorin OS is basically a revamped Ubuntu (i am not english by birth so i don't know the correct term to use) if that is true then i am deeply wondering which version Zorin OS 12.3 is based of from Ubuntu? Because i have followed every step that is provided in both links and still no change when i press enter / return on either install Zorin OS or try before installing, i remember there was once with my current PC where i tried to install Ubuntu OS though i cannot remember which version, but it also failed no matter what i did, then came Ubuntu 16.04 and that was the game changer for me, then i could suddenly install without any issues.

Hi, Zorin 12.x is the first Zorin OS that is a rolling release based on Ubuntu 16.04

Thank you for answering this :) I guess i will have to try harder even though i am absolutely clueless as to do now! i have even converted my nvme ssd from samsung from mbr to gpt and that did nothing, i have also just used most of my afternoon on trying to restore my usb after the last time i used etcher to flash it :( The worst part of this is i have already updated my bios firmware to the latest, and unfortunately it is an update that dates back to late last year :(

I have just found this link which semi-describes my issue, i found the link searching for the firmware bug i receive : https://zoringroup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13412
I am not quite sure if Zorin OS is registering my AVerMedia Live Gamer HD 2 (internal video recording device for hdmi inputs) as a secondary GPU, but i think i will try and remove it and see if i then can install Zorin OS :) i will get back to you guys and tell if it works or not!

EDIT: it doesn't change a thing, but i know my cpu does not have an integrated gpu of any kind :/

Was there any joy changing to AHCI in the BIOS?

standtall007

Sun Apr 08, 2018 6:44:07 pm

Unfortunately no, however i have found out by contacting ASUS directly, that they are working on a new BIOS Update, but unfortunately they cannot tell me currently when they expect to release it for my motherboard, and that BIOS update does contain the newest microcode from Intel.

Also i have not mentioned to you that i keep getting an firmware bug TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata; please update microcode to version: 0xb000020 (or later).
That bug is the only consistent message i constantly get when trying to install Zorin onto my main PC, so for now i have chosen to wait for ASUS to release their BIOS update, and while i wait i have downloaded VMWare Workstation 14 and can begin my programming in the virtual machine :) it's not what i hoped for but it can at least get me somewhere while i cannot install Zorin onto the computer as a main OS dual booting together with Windows 10 :)

Thanks for the update - have you tried installing using VirtualBox inside of Windows 10? ;) :D

standtall007

Sun Apr 08, 2018 7:09:46 pm

Yeah i have, but VirtualBox is not worth it even if it is free, i mean i Can run Zorin OS in it, but the lag VirtualBox brings to the OS is just unbearable! i had even changed how many threads it should use to 4 and i had also changed the max ram usage to 8192MB but it still lagged so much i had to find a better alternative.
