Issue with Monitor Resolution

I'm using Zorin 12 and up to this point I've been using a VGA connector to connect my computer to my monitor. I recently got a VGA to HDMI converter though and it upped the resolution a good amount. I tried lowering it by a couple options and then it went to a black screen and I can't get it to come back up. Whenever I use the VGA connection again it works like before but when I try to do HDMI it just boots to a black screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Just to understand the options - what inputs (e.g. VGA, HDMI etc) and associated resolutions can your monitor take - it will be in the back of its manual.

Also what outputs do you have from your PC (e.g. VGA, HDMI etc).
