Wi-Fi icon not showing up

DoomsdayHoliday

Wed Apr 25, 2018 1:59:19 pm

Hey,

I tried several things from this forum and the Wi-Fi icon just won't show up on my PC. Specs: https://i.imgur.com/D6xoiog.png

Zorin is also running on my laptop and everything works fine there with the WiFi.

On the PC though, I updated everything and I Installed the usb realtek driver from the wireless usb cd adapter, picked a not too new windows (7) .inf file: https://i.imgur.com/l4oJyo4.png

and created a WiFi network there, just like with the laptop, adding the right device number and WAP/WAP2 key. Nothing. It just won't show up in the preferences->network: https://i.imgur.com/T73QNTY.png

Here are some command's results, that you guys regularly ask for:

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

Having entered your id for the wireless (usb dongle?) and searching online I get this:

Realtek RTL8811AU Wireless

Is that the correct model number?

I also found this:

http://www.driverhive.com/driverdetails ... rk+Adapter

I also found this information:

https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1578

but when I click on the link for the drivers and in the left search for unix, that model is not listed.

I would go for Windows 7 or even Windows 8 .inf driver as kernels for GNU/Linux are updating all the time for latest support - can you connect via ethernet and if not installed arlready, download Synaptic Package Manager and search for 'ndiswrapper' and make sure any unchecked packages are marked for installation.

Keep us posted. ;) :D

Hey, man, thanks for the help!

The thing with the usb wifi dongle is it doesn't say Realtek anywhere on the package or data sheet https://i.imgur.com/7WyhgmO.jpg

As said when asked by the OS to pick an .inf file I already chose the Windows 7, 8 and 10 usb driver file from the disc to test. There is also a linux folder on it, but I don't get it to work unless i work through the dozen of complicated .pdf instruction files. I am just a filthy casual.

The ndiswrapper packages in the synaptic package manager were already installed, but nothing : /

What is the make and model of the dongle please? ;)

I don't know who made it, it is a no-name model, see in the last comment the linked picture. And I am a bit clueless about the model to be honest.

Done some more searching based on the minimal information you are able to provide and I found this old enemy of mine:

https://www.tp-link.com/us/products/det ... r-T2U.html

Same specs (AC 600). I bought one from a local supermarket (tp-link one) and it would not work - why? because it was dependent on a very out-dated kernel. That is the equivalent of selling hardware that will only work on Windows XP!

My advice to you is to look here (and I am not on commission!)

https://thinkpenguin.com/catalog/wirele ... g-gnulinux

Or alternatively look at the latest compatibility list here:

Hey, I appreciate your help! Thank you very much for helping me out, I was lost tbh!
I am just a casual linux user and not deep into the subject as you are.

So the USB dongle is incompatible with linux and I'd have to send it back/replace it? So that is why the Zorin OS "driver emulation" won't even work, right?

Again, thank you for the provided links, I will pick one out, that will work and do my homework/research before ordering, I just have to find the usb adapter in an european shop/amazon/ebay.

EDIT: The updates from the ubuntu help list seem to be old sometimes, even five years or more.

When I look at this site's recommendation: http://www.wirelesshack.org/top-linux-c ... pters.html and compare it to the list, can I pick a recommendation for Zorin although some "older" updates report problems? Sorry for asking.

So I found an AVM FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N in my dads office. According to the following list it run with an atheros driver.

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/DNI:USB_WiFi_ ... ux_support

I looked up FAQs for this dongle, downloaded the drivers, they were installed succesfully

ndiswrapper -l

and the usb dongle is connected/shown in the usb port

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 057c:6201 AVM GmbH AVM Fritz!WLAN v1.1 [Texas Instruments TNETW1450]

but I still don't have a Wi-Fi logo/interface showing up

iwconfig

Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated

RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off

Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

lo no wireless extensions.

enp3s0 no wireless extensions.

I rebooted the OS, plugged the dongle in/out several times and set up the network Wi-Fi accordingly with the right device number and WAP/WAP2 code.

Any suggestions?

Hello, I am reading the post and cannot see the name of your device.

The RTL you mention is the driver it is using, please if you can write for me the name and model of the device you are having trouble with.

I have learned a bit of that myself , since my USB WIFI Adaptor has a Relatek chip and it is not linux friendly originaly.

Check this post (advise, it is not the same problem that you have but there is a clue 1st - I instaled Zorin 12, which has Kernel 14.3: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13789

2nd- Swarf told me to update my kernel for the next one, which I haven’t time to do yet, because I have to make a back up first)
*if you have time / patience / or are curious this is another topic related (then again it is not the same problem but you can take ideas) viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13746

(Regarding Atheros I have learned from another place it is Linux friendly.)

Regardin the Wi FI icon, despite of the driver issue I would like to recommend this: right click on the panel – add new elements - “indicator complement” (I have translated this from spanish , hope you find something similar)

Here is a pic to guide you (it is in spanish but icons should help).

(I don't understand the paramethers you send us but hope this is helpful)

Thank you for your help pcfan! Couldn't find the menu you mentioned, but the case is solved!

I have found another wifi usb adapter in my dad's office, that has an atheros chip set.

According to the following list it runs with an atheros driver.

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/DNI:USB_WiFi_ ... ux_support

I looked up FAQs for this dongle, downloaded the .inf drivers, which were installed succesfully under settings-wifi setup

ndiswrapper -l

Someone over at reddit in a linux helping sub suggested the command line

Code:
sudo ip link set enx001a4f4925bf up

and it worked!

The icon showed up, I could choose a network and type in the pw.

Hey Swarf, not quite yet ;)! It works, but the Wi-Fi icon disappears everytime I reboot and I have to plug the USB dongle in again to get the wifi signal showing and going again. Any idea how I would make it "stay there permanently/show up when rebooting" and ditch the cable for good? Like an automatic usb boot of that stick?

EDIT: maybe something along the line like this? https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2256448

The usb is flashing/working, should I just wait longer than three minutes?

Code:

:? What did I do wrong this time? Do I have to find out my module number first?

OK, well done for finding that other link, I'm impressed! I have to admit that I failed on my last post as I did not check the link.

Anyhow, go to that page you found, download the tar.bz2 file named "firmware-acx111usb-2.4.0.70.tar.bz2" and extract it. Now it does not say it is an .inf file but see if it will install when using the Windows wireless option and you point to the extracted file?

It is fine, I just searched the firmware code specifically with " " in the search engine. I downloaded the .tar file, extracted it and used the windows wireless option in Zorin. Doesn't work :x I get the message "not an .inf file" and says it is not a correct driver: https://i.imgur.com/eltk8S1.png The xp driver works fine.

I also gave that extracted file an .inf ending, but sitll. I wonder how the user got it working with the exact problem in your posted link. :O

Should I consider buying another Wi-Fi adapter to get it running on Zorin?

I searched for an atheros chip set Wi-Fi adapter and the Alfa Network AWUS036NHA is often recommended. What do you think?

Hi, Done some more searching and found this which says it all really!

http://acx100.sourceforge.net/

None of the links on How-to are live etc, just get an error.

If you want to be certain of a wireless dongle that works, as per advice on the Ubuntu Wireless page:

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/wi ... g-gnulinux

or a second hand Netgear WG111v3 adapter which is what I use and it works out of the box. :D

Yeah, happens! ;( It was worth a try though! Maybe it helps someone else!

I'll be looking for the thinkpenguin ubuntu wire adapter, which is a bit pricey for ordering it overseas. I am from Europe.

I already found a a Netgear WG111v3 online. Do you think this is another option?

https://www.linux-onlineshop.de/de/Hard ... g/n.tuxedo

And this model: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00LLI ... A3O6&psc=1

where it says in the comment it is plug and play since Ubuntu 16.09 LTS
