[resolved] Who is root

Whilst delving in CUPS, I came across a note to say that root or your username could be used along with a password.


Root has always seemed an elusive concept to me and alien to my Windows experience.

What is this all powerful Root exactly - does it have a name - how do you find out its name if it has one - how do you put it into an application as an alternte to username?


One of Linux's mysteries to me.

I assume you are referring to the superuser password. It is not set by default, hence root login is disabled. The specific user account, created during ubuntu install, is associated with full sudo capabilities. The username and password are supplied by the install performer. Root User is not enabled by default in Ubuntu.

In mostly linux distro's default password is toor i.e reverse of root
